I am replacing my oil pick up screen as it has a hole in it. I found something rattling around inside it cut it open and found this washer disk thing.
How this did not plug the intake and cause engine failure I don't know.

Are you sure that's not the head of a valve? The old-style valves were 2-part valves with the head and the stem made separately and then fullered together. Is that possible??? Basil 707.762.0974 basiladams@yahoo.com

That disc is supposed to be spot welded to the inside of the screen right below the pickup pipe.

As Barney says it is supposed to be spot welded to the inside of the screen below the end of the pick up tube. My guess is that is prevents the oil from being sucked into a vortex that might allow air to be sucked in.
I had one break loose and it would occasionally partially block the pick up tube. As did Jeff S (Blueosprey90). The end of the pick up tube is notched so the errant disc was not able to totally block the pick up tube.

That makes sense. Crappy design, expecting a few wires to hold a vibrating disc in place. I bought another used one off ebay that does not have the disc.

Moss lists the same part number for MGA & MGB pick up screens.
The replacement I got has a U shaped bracket welded to the top plate. The bottom of the U is positioned below the pick up tube - no disc spot welded to the screen. In defense of BMC, the original part pasted ~ 60 years. I doubt the designers had any thought about it lasting so long.

My early 59 1600 was parked in the early 70's because of that,it did get sucked up to the port and starved #1 rod bearing. I have never seen another but knew there had to be more out there. I converted to the style that had the outside strap. Wonder why they thought they are needed?

Same thing happened to me recently. See post 302. http://www.mgexp.com/phorum/read.php?2,2962382,page=21
That was a new screen. I think the idea originally was to reinforce the screen with a u shaped metal strap so that if the oil pan dented, some space would be left for oil to get to the pickup. At least, if I was designing, that would be my theory. The disc, seems dumb. But it may be magnetic, as mine got stuck to the top after I removed it.
