Hello again guys,
Have a question regarding main bearing caps, my son pulled all the main caps off without marking any, it is obvious which are front, rear and center but the other two are the problem. the only markings on them is 18h3904 8 Q and 18h3904 9S is there a way to find which position they belong in?
Thanks Fred

It's possible it will be obvious if you try to refit them to the block, if wrong there may be steps in the bores when of course they should be perfectly round.

If you can't detect any steps or apparent differences then it may come down to looking for any sign of binding on assembly, which you would do anyway of course winking smiley

#s 2 & 4 are usually stamped with the number 2 or 4 next to the bolt hole. At least on 18V engines.

Yeppers to Dave, they are only ones marked, because those are the only two you could put in the wrong place.

Dave x3. The front and rear caps are obvious, and can only go on one way, in one location. As Dave pointed out, the second and fourth caps are physically interchangeable, so it's important to note the "2" and the "4" during reassembly. Also note that caps 2, 3, and 4 are all marked "Front" to facilitate reassembly... Also, a reminder that the oil grooves on the thrust washers on the center main cap face the ends of the block, and not toward each other...
