Just obtained a 1960, 1600 MG-A. Great car but the transmissions 1st gear and reverse are 'clunky' and make disturbing noises when being used. Trying to find out the best economical fix. Any one know where I can source a good rebuilt tranny?
Also if you know of a reliable shop in the Toronto area that would do the work.

Cheers, Mark

How disturbing & what sort of noises? Both first & reverse are straight cut gears. They will be noisier than the other gears.

If you are going to take it out yourself then you can also rebuild it yourself. It is not all that complicated and Barney has all the instructions.

My car was like that then I kept driving it and it got better - actually, it was me that got better. You can learn to doulble clutch and don't try to downshift into first above about 1200 rpms.

I eventually rebuild my box myself - about $300 in parts. It was a great learning experience. I highly recommend you try it.

I have a whole spare transmission here in NH, but not sure how I'd get it to you. There are many lying around however, so maybe some one will come to your aid.

Good luck,

JIM

Post a MGA transmission required ad on Kijiji. There are a few good ones around as most guys are changing to a 5-speed. Too bad, I knew someone who just threw out a good set of cluster gears for one of those transmissions. But that is the way it goes sometimes.
