Just picked up a supposedly rebuilt (15 yrs ago) V engine. It has no id tag (ripped off). The head is stamped 12H2923, and the block castings are 12H3508 & below that is AF5. The circular stamp has A on left, 3 upper right, & 2 lower right. Any idea what year it is?

72-74 apparently. They went back to smaller valve heads later on. Or so I have read. But if it's been rebuilt it might just have mismatching components. I have read somewhere that the 71's also had big valves not sure though. What performance gain do you even get from having the bigger valves. I bet it's marginal.

MGB GT 1972 Black hand painted.

Future plans:

Rover K series conversion, in the shop.

Apparently a 73 engine with the desirable big-valve cylinder head...
