John-
Manual probably doesn't give torque spec. because they call for one of those "fold-over" lock tab washer. Those OEM lock tab washers worked well, because they were good firm steel. New replacements are so flimsy, they can't be trusted... Don't ask how I know!
I think it was Rick Ingram that posted once, all bolts get tightened to "just shy of the point of shear". Good advice for that particular nut.
I lost mine once. First, they're very expensive to replace. Second, with that nut loose or AWOL, it sounds like the whole crank is flopping around in the oil pan. Third, it makes a heck of a mess of the Woodruff keyway in both balancer and crank nose.
I have since gone the belt / suspenders / belt route. Tight as I can get it with a 24" Crescent wrench, Blue LOC-TITE, and the best lock-tab washer I can find.
Hope this helps-
Dave

The problem I've found with the tab washers available nowadays is that they're so flimsy that the little tang that fits into the keyway shears off very easily. Great care has to be taken that the washer doesn't turn AT ALL, when tightening the nut.
But, I'm sure you knew all that.

That's a good question! Maybe put a couple of bolts into the from of the harmonic balancer where the smog pump pulley bolts on and a stiff breaker bar across them to the floor so it won't turn. Just sort of an idea. I used a bar thru the drive shaft universal but I have manual trannies.
