I see where VB is having a great sale on chrome bumpers until the end of the year. I'd like to know the quality before I purchase. Has anyone ordered one from them recently?

The last one that I had came on a restored car and was several years old. The ends were not formed even close to OE, and the chrome had rust coming through it. Maybe things have changed.

If your old bumper(s) can be rechromed, do it. Might be more expensive but well worth it. Wish I could find a couple old bumpers for my 68 VW Beetle to get rechromed ... all the replacements I've seen / bought simply don't last very long!

Bob x2. OEM in rough shape are still better than the new aftermarket ones.

Chrome shops can do amazing things to old bumpers.

I agree. In a long restoration I purchased the MGA front bumper, not from VB, but from the other biggie and foolishly tossed out the original. Come reassembly the replacement was really light weight, and barely fit after much twisting and bending. The rear bumper was rechromed and fit just fine.

Be safe out there.

I've had real good luck with bumpers from the other biggy. They went to a lot of work to get the ends of the bumpers to look closer to OE, and the chrome doesn't die in short order. Lighter? Maybe. I don't care.
Edit: I have a bunch of OE bumpers that could be rechromed but no one wants to pay $20 each then rechrome them; they go for the new ones.

$20 per bumper + rechroming is the way I'd go....if I needed good bumpers. smiling smiley

Just bought a used original for $50. Good nuff deal for me.

P.S. It's replacing a rusted aftermarket bumper.

Do a search and you'll find lots of comments and chrome service sources. From personal experience, it's amazing the repairs a good shop can do. My rear bumper was in sad shape and they straightened it wonderfully and then did a high quality chrome job. Inexpensive? No, but worth it IMHO.

The last rear bumper I saw from VB hung out on the curve under the taillights far enough you could stick your hand in there...and it was installed as best as it could be.

Rechromes for me.

I have rechromed rear ones which were done in 1981 on my 70 GT and they still look like new, in fact better than the OE front one I bought for it a few years later. It is starting to spiderweb a bit.

Whatever you do, a heavy coat of rust preventative paint on the back side is a good idea.

New chromed bumpers are not as good as the old ones. If you don't have the original ors, buy them even rusted and re-chrome them. Not cheap, but should last years if well done and well maintained

You guys just saved me some money. I'll stick with what I have and somewhere down the line have it rechromed.

No we did not save you money because to redo the chrome the way it should be done is more expensive than buying the new c..p.
But we did give you a good advice!

Scrub the old chrome with soap & water and a wad of aluminum foil, rinse, then wax. You will be surprised at the results. Old used car dealer trick.

Sent photos to moss and they saw no problem and would not guarantee exchange any better, plus I pay shipping to them and back. They also said I could have them redone at my own ex[pense. Nice. Looking for o;d origional which is what I did with the rears.
