I tried to list a converter on eBay about 10 years ago, they wouldn't allow me to run it.

Cheap enough for a spare. How often do they go bad, needing replacement?

I just called my MG Guru, who years ago told me I had a cat, and called to ask above Q, either for me, or for him to buy for his customers. He told me to get rid of mine.
He told me Canadian cars didn't have a cat, but told him years ago the told me I had one.

I've never looked closely on my car as there is an asbestos? shield preventing view. Just looked closely, and looks like there isn't one. Also this Ebay pic shows me first time what it looks like.

The cat in that ebay listing is empty.
You can no longer sell a used cat in California.
I'm pretty sure you can still give one away, though. smiling smiley

"You can no longer sell a used cat in California.

"Why not? It helps reduce emissions. Is it that used one may not work properly?

You're asking the wrong guy.
This statement from CARB talks about the changes that went into effect in 2008:
www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermktcat/amcatq&a.pdf

I believe that there was rampant replacement of CATs by service outfits out to make a quick buck when most of the time no replacement was necessary. That, along with a high theft rate on CATs, and replacement CATs that don't meet the longevity requirements in California triggered a revamp of the legal situation.
