This question relates to my other car, a 1972 240Z. (see attached pic spinning smiley sticking its tongue out) I've asked on the Z forums, good guys but there not as active as this MGB site. Its more of a general classic car question as these cloth braided hoses are available for may classics.

My question is, does the braiding do anything or is just for looks? The orignal hoses on teh 240Z were braided, but NLA, there are after market braided hoses but they cost 4X as much as the straight moulded rubber versions.

Anyone have any exprience or expertise in this area.

just bling. rubber rots inside them just like uncovered ones. i actually don't like them because they are more abrasive if they rub anything and they conduct electricity. i learned both of these things when my plug wires got too close to my braided oil cooler lines. if it was oe looking and not near anything i might consider it, but i replace mine when they look old. hard to tell when braided. i guess i just don't like them.

IMHO it was reinforcing. The hose itself was deemed, I imagine, a little insufficient to handle the respected pressures. So they added more on the outside,

Initially I would say that it's just for looks, but thats a 240Z - a game changing sports car of it's day and it makes me wonder. I had a Toyota pickup from the early 80's and the build quality under the hood was way beyond other cars of it's time when it came to small things like that. I remember being impressed with the water tight electrical connectors, complete with O ring seals. ...anyway, I'd find better Z people to ask.

The only place I have used braided fuel lines was under the car by the fuel pump, to protect from road debris. I had a small section left to add bling to the engine compartment, but only because it wouldn't get used otherwise!
