The strap does not sit in the middle of the bracket
Is it supposed to be fixed from the side?

Detlev, something doesn't seem right from your pics. Maybe my bad from the position that you have taken the pic though. Here a a couple of pics from my 67 that's on a rotisserie. View is from the car setting on it's driver's side. Bolts are temporary just to hold the position of the straps.
Hope this helps.

Thanx. But my rubber bumpstop is right under the slot in the body. So to attach the strap i have to twist it.

Both sides the same!

Detlev, I believe your are right, my bad!
Just talked to Jack Orkin and his strap mounts on the inside (toward the center of the car) of both flanges secured by a bolt going from the outside thru both flanges and then thru the strap.
Looks like you had the right idea to mount the straps.

After seeing yours and Larry's post, I couldn't remember how mine was, so I took a picture. (Mine is a '74, if it makes any difference.) And, I'm not guaranteeing that this is correct, just that this is the way it is on my car, and it seems to work fine. Well, it seems to line up fine. I haven't gotten airborne to see if the strap works!

Really, really dam clean. I can see and find every component in that photo. Clean = horsepower boost when you begin to drive the car again. devil smiley Get the straps right first, though!
