Took a rear drum off for the first time today and immediately noticed THAT smell of diff oil... As I continued I expected to find the shoes and inside of drum covered in oil, but no..
There is just a slight trace of oil on both mating faces where the drum attaches to the hub. (You can see from the photos)

So does this mean the gasket needs sealing/ changing as this is the early stages of the leak?

The hub seal is dry incidently, so no leaks there.

Maybe the PO put some grease on the mating surfaces to prevent sticking?

There is a 4mm drain hole between the two lower backplate fixing bolts make sure this is clear, MGA and Magnettes etc have the same axle and these holes are often over looked. I always enlarge these to 6mm.

The oil can leak past the paper seal and and through the retaining screws

That is an easy fix. Just pull the axle out and replace the gasket and O-ring. Since the hub seal is dry, leave it alone.

Thanks Trevor (and others)

I will try some loctite gasket sealant on it first. What type is best?

Am I going to need a slide hammer to remove the half shaft?

Ian none of it is a big deal! Cut some new gaskets out of gasket paper or a cereal box, fit a new large O ring to the bearing carrier if your car uses one (IIRC there's also a lip seal at the inner end of the hub that will need replacing by now) and use a good quality non hardening gasket sealant on the axle and joint faces. The axle slides out directly as the axle hub carries the bearing and the load.

That cover is likely warped, and the mating face it attaches to is also probably warped. When you pull the axle, run a file across the gasket surface to knock down the high spots, and use a good glue like Permatex #2, not silicon! It took me a couple tries to get mine to stop leaking, so make everything is perfect before sealing it up!

As i keep saying on various forums, remove the breather from the main axle body, give it a good wash and refit, at worst you have nothing to lose.

Thanks Dave
Point noted. I know this can build pressure if not done.

When I painted the axle I was aware of these breathers, seeking them out and making sure I cleaned them out using a drill bit. End holes were completely blocked and top one not brilliant.

My thoughts are that it's this lack of care over time by PO that caused the issues here.

Thanks all for chipping in here..

Well... I undid the flange screws and the half shaft popped out (with some help) was all a bit scary, but the first time I'd ever meddled with a rear axle...

Was expecting hundreds of gallons of oil, but no ! Used gasket sealant and will monitor the repair.

Yours apprehensively.........

I have stopped panicking and sealed the flange. We will see how this goes.
