Yes, I used this on a 1974 MGB with HIF4 carbs. The car had sat in a garage for 20 years.
After disassembling the carbs I let the aluminum parts soak for not longer that 4 hours per instructions. It removed most of the varnish, I had to do a little more cleaning.

Used carb dip back in the 70s and early 80s. Works great, but nasty toxic stuff. Had as 55 gallon barrel half full to dip air cooled VW cases in. Cresylic acid, chlorinated hydrocarbons. We found less toxic alternatives. The new stuff they sell now may be a bit different, but maybe not.

When I cleaned my carbs I used cellulose paint thinners and a small paint brush. Worked well and was cheap.

Not as explosive as using paint thinner or gas.

Look and see if Gunk has the same ingredients. I use it all the time.
It may be the same thing.

I've used both Gunk and Berryman when rebuilding carbs. The Berryman worked a lot better in my opinion. The guy who did the Moss carb rebuild video recommended it. Good stuff.

Gentleman I know has a parts washer... (wish I had one) and he stopped using that stuff for a low VOC cleaning fluid because it doesn't evaporate away at night and between jobs but the one you suggest is a standard for lo these 80 years.

I've used it for carbs etc. For greasy, dirty parts I use 1 gallon of purple power + 1 gallon of water in a 5 gallon bucket. Takes a little longer but works a treat. paul

Used it for years. Very effective for this day and age. Not as powerfull as it was decades ago. Let parts sit overnight then heavy water flush.
Beware - the odors from the ingredients get into your clothes, hair, skin, anything. Even if you are carefull you are going to smell of it for days after just opening the can.
Regards, Jon
