I am aware of the VIN plate on the door post of course, as well as the one under the windshield. I also have one stamped on the passenger floor by the transmission tunnel. But today I was installing the front cross member and I noticed what "looks like" the car serial number (490173) stamped on this small welded plate (click for higher res version)

Anyone saw this before?

The location you "discovered," is a well known location. Check out the article, Decoding the MGB VIN in the Tech Library. The VIN on the frame was done only for NA cars, and was done by Pressed Steel when they made the chassis.

On some of the older cars, that stamp may or may not be there. Likewise the stamp on the passenger floor. My 67 does not have that stamp. It may have the VIN on the cross member, but I've never had a chance to really look close.

Thanks for the clear images. This identification location is difficult to document, so its nice to have a picture.

Kelvin.

VIN/Serial number stamped in the right side frame rail above the rear A-arm attachment is typical. Sometimes the VIN is stamped on the top of the right side frame rail in the boot.

Be safe out there.
Kenny

In reply to # 3318458 by dipstick Sometimes the VIN is stamped on the top of the right side frame rail in the boot.

This is only on the later cars. Be lovely to find out at what change point, so far I've seen it on 79 and 80 models.
Lloyd was trying to gather data on the change points, but the last time the subject came up there were not many replies.
