Can anyone tell me if I can use a 1970-1974 chrome split rear bumper on my 79 mg. Also can I use a 70-74 full bumper on the front. Any help would be a big help. Thanks

x2 what Eric said

To elaborate a little bit more: bodywork is needed to make it come out looking right

- two big, welded "horns" need to be cut off of the front end
- the oversized turn signal "holes" need to be filled (front end again)
- the missing shapes on the rear bodywork need to be replaced, to avoid leaving a bunch of flat surfaces that won't look right otherwise

There are a variety of strategies people have used over the years to accomplish these things (and a search in the archives here should bring up lots of photos and past discussions).

You can do the rear easier than the front. The rubber bumper rear has extra mounting squares that can somewhat be obscured by earlier chrome rear bumperettes. Lots of examples of how the front can be done. Whatever you do, please find turnsignals that don't simply hang in the rectangles of the later 1500 front fenders.

Thank you Cant wait to get started. What Iam going to do is keep the original fenders and place a pc of sheetmetal where the turn signal are. then i will fill the holes. Once that is done Iam going to use the 1961 round turn signals.

thumbs up That's what I'm talking about, brother! I think the round turn signals look best in that position.

I performed a "bumperectomy" on my 1977. A vendor here on the MG Experience made me fiberglass fender extensions to fill the flat bits under the tail lamps. I elected to leave them as a removable, replaceable body panels should I manage to damage one instead of smoothing them into the bodywork. But you could certainly do that. I welded up the signal aperatures in my factory fenders and left them smooth. sliced off the frame horns at the front and used them as mounting points for miniature dual-filament motorcycle turn signals. They have flat black housings and smoked lenses, so the are invisible until they're lit. I dealt with the bumper mounts on the tail by beating them below grade with a hammer, then filling with plastic. If you are interested to see how I did my conversion, I have a complete photo anthology from beginning to end, and will be happy to answer any questions you might have about how I solved certain problems.

Here are a couple more photos of the body work. My car was in really dismal condition when I started, with a lot of issues besides just the bodywork. I elected to take the "nuclear option" and do everything. At once.

Yes that is exactly what I did. My pictures are on my laptop send e mail address and I will send a couple. I am also thinking of using split bumper in the front.to match the back. That will take a little more doing, but may do it if I can't a narrow full width bumper. Good luck. cool smileyJM
