Totally agree the Merlin engine is such a beautiful sound, and like with the exhaust debate that's been going on in the perfect road, the sound is slightly different, dependant on what aircraft it's in.

What a beauty! Incidentally, my great uncle was an illustrator and did a bunch of drawings and paintings of covered bridges in Wisconsin. I didn't realize there were also some in Ohio, too.

Your question tempted me and i looked it up. They were covered to keep snow off, as extra weight fro snow was not desired. We both learned something new!
