Gerald, I've been using Castrol 20W50 oil in my '67 B for over 46 years. No complaints so far. RAY

I just watched a video with the 3 million mile Volvo that runs on Castrol GTX 20/50. Seems promising. Might be ok for our flat tappet engines...

Adrian, the owner of that Volvo has never let anyone else drive the car from the day he purchased it. Wise move. RAY

I heard they took zddp out of VR1. Probably a rumor is my guess.
I found out today that Mobil 1 15w/50 has 1300ppm of zddp... because I called and asked them. They have zddp in most of their synthetic oils... but mostly between 750 and 900ppm.
Can anyone tell me what's in Castrol gtx 20w/50? What about Castrol motorcycle 20w/50?

I look in the garage for the last summer 20w50 Castrol GTX bottle and it is written but it is too small for me to read it.
I went on their website and the GTX is rated as .12% of ZPPD.

I use Amsoil break in oil from the first crank through 500 miles, then Amsoil ZRod 20/50. it's pricy, but one oil change a year (mgb gets garaged when winter hits) and it's not all that bad really.
If you want an oil that is still high in zinc, look to the diesel line of oils. It's almost impossible to find any appreciable amount of zinc in any off the shelf motor oil for gasoline burning "modern cars". Zinc will coat and kill the catalytic converter in short order. So modern oils for gasoline powered automobiles just doesn't have anything other than "trace amounts" of zinc.
Also...look CLOSELY at the labels for any zinc additive. Not all will actually have any zinc at all in them.
Hyper lubes zinc additive for example contains no zinc whatsoever, but Lucas brand zinc additive does actually contain real zinc!
Respectfully,
Timothy

If it ends in "/50" regardless of brand...it's perfectly fine for your old tractor engine.
Everything else is personal preference only...
"One test is worth a thousand expert opinions"--Alvin "Tex" Johnston...Boeing test pilot.
73 MGB. Tires: Round, black, hold air. Oil: Sometimes old, sometimes new...always slippery. Oil filter: Yellow, usually full of oil. Carbs: 2 SU HIF. Distributor: Yes. Headlights: Not that bright but bright enough. A bunch of other stuff most cars have but not really important enough to itemize. Oh, wait...it has a cool sounding exhaust with stickers on the chrome tips. Really slays the ladies...

Here is a pdf chart dated 2018 from Mobil listing 31 motor oils. All 31 oils contain at least 750ppm zddp and a few are over 1300ppm. Most of them are formulated for modern cars.
https://mobiloil.com/~/media/amer/us/pvl/files/pdfs/mobil-1-oil-product-specs-guide.pdf How do I post this up so that it can be read and not be lost when the Mobil site changes?
I would like to see charts from other oil companies like this. There is a lot of anecdotal information floating around out there about oil and zddp. It should be possible to find out from oil companies just what is what. We have a lot of members.... manpower to solve this issue of what oil has or does not have zddp. Let's get it done.
