Gas smell at dipstick

I do now, PO didn't have one installed. Would I not have fuel delivery issues if I had a tank issue? I need to put a gauge on it but I seem to be getting good flow to the carbs. I should probably take it off anyways as you say just in case

You may have posted but I missed it. You do have a good quality fuel filter before the carbs?

Since this started with the empty gas tank, you might consider removing the tank for cleaning, inspection and possible replacement. I've seen folks spend a lot of time fighting carb and pump issues that eventually led back to the tank. I've also seen the crud from the tank completely block the steel line running forward from the pump and the crud block the tank venting.
