I needed to replace the incorrect chrome grill slats on my TD. I did not find suitable information on how to do this; most forum posts dealt with removing the radiator completely.
Well, it is possible to just get the grill shell/slats out without too much pain.
1. Remove bonnet. Two people are needed.
2. Remove the 2 bolts holding the headlight bracket that protrudes through the grill shell. No need to remove the big bolts on the bracket.
3. Remove the two nuts on the headlight bracket under the front wings. The headlight/bracket ass'y can now be lifted away, but there will still be the connecting wire. Be careful the bracket studs do not scratch the wings. Wrap the end in a towel and with a helper holding the bracket tie with string to a ceiling joist, etc. repeat other side.
4. Remove radiator cap.
5 remove 8 flathead screws/nuts holding the grille shell to the radiator.

The shell can now be lifted from the car. Pull up and forward slightly.

That's it!

If you are replacing chrome slats with painted I would be interested in your chrome ( if in good condition) for my MK II project

Let me know.
Thanks

Hello together,

I know replying to an old thread seems to be a silly thing, on the other hand, I am always happy reading these informations and if something helpful is contained, it doesn't matter when it was written.

So, today with the help of this very useful advice I removed the radiator shell of our TC without the removal of the nuts of the headlight brackets. Just a little struggeling, but without any danger for any bits. I think this is a nice improvement, because no risk of damage resulting of loose lamps is to be concerned.

Best regards
Lindi

Hello Kenneth, will you be selling the chrome grille? If so, I'm interested.
