Rebuilt TD transmission needed from UK

I'm trying to help an Italian TD owner who made the mistake of buying an incomplete car, with no drive-train. His current need is for a complete, rebuilt TD transmission, with late bell housing and shift tower, ready to install with his TD2 engine.

Shipping and duties from the UK will certainly be less than from the US. All help is appreciated.

Tom, why does not he go straight to Moss England?
There is everything he needs.
Sincerely, Thierry de l'Ardèche, South of France

Thierry - he has no transmission to rebuild; he needs a complete transmission.

I have suggested he look into a Hi-Gear 5-speed, which he will also do.

After completing my TD restoration, if I didn't have a working gearbox for my TD, I would have gone straight to the Hi-Gear 5 speed solution, unless he is looking for a concours original look that is. With the 5 speed he could take an occasional trip on the Autostrada's without incurring the wrath off fellow motorists ;-)

Is the TF transmission the same as the TD? If so there is one for sale on page 5 of mgbuyswapsell.com.au.
No connection but just saw it advertised.

Ok Tom, when you talk about transmission, you mean La Boite de Vitesse! We in Europe is the back deck.
In his case, indeed, it is advisable advice to advise him to mount a 5 speed gearbox.

There are two for sale on ebay uk right now that are claimed to be good and usable (£395). There are also a couple in need of rebuild for half that money, indeed I have one myself (condition unknown but probably needs a complete rebuild). Same gearbox for TD and TF.

Tom,
Here it is. I think Dave is too busy with his distributor at the moment. There are actually two at the same price but different sellers-

Declan was correct - on both counts. Those are the ones I saw. They turn up on ebay uk fairly often - sometimes rebuilt sometimes for rebuilding.

Both these offerings from eBay UK show only the assembled gearbox with the top cover in place. As I and others have pointed out it is impossible to have a look at the all important cluster gear and its shaft without a total dismantle. If these two parts need replacing then you are looking at close to $1100 USD. not to mention the $300 or so for the 1st gearif it needs replacing. We have not even gotten into the synchro's or the bearings.

That is why I have urged the Italian gentleman to seriously consider a transmission from the well-known MG wizard, Hugh Pite, which costs a bit more but was completely disassembled, checked and photographed by Hugh before re-assembly.

Like any old car, buy the very best your budget can afford, and chances are you will never be disappointed.

I have a TD/F gearbox with NEW cluster gear and shaft (among other parts) for little more than the price of the cluster and shaft. More pictures of the disassembled gearbox and assembled gearbox are available on request.
