Oil draining from filter
#1
This topic is about my 1968 MG MGC GT

My MGC GT auto drains all the oil from the filter, back into the sump. This means a period on startup when there is no oil pressure, while the filter housing is filling.
( This has the side advantage of allowing filter changes without excessive oil lost down the side of the engine).
However, I would rather the filter stayed full, and pressure came up almost immediately.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to improve this?
Are spin- on cartridge filters the answer, and if so, how to identify those with flow in the right direction, plus having a non return valve?

Graham

Hi Graham,

My car is fitted with a Flexolite spin on filter adapter and I use a non return type K&N HP-2009 filter. I changed the oil and filter last week and not a drop of oil was spilt.

At 1000rpm that pump can shift 45lts per min so the 1 ltr section will fill quickly, I do use the spin on filters HP2009 all the time very good filter with anti drain valve. Even this system will over a period drain back.

Graham - I think there is a JR video on converting to a spin on oil filter if you are interested.
