I think that is very appropriate. As I remember Racoon tails flying off car antennas was a common thing in the 50's/60's

Deboned fully ,
Skinned, scraped, wire brushed, washed in hot water with a few drops of bleach, towel dried , salted hide for 2 days, brushed again and hand worked till supple.
Done a hundred or more that way, no fleas or others.thumbs up
