I just received a working Smiths Speedometer to replace my non-working speedometer in my '74 MGB. The replacement speedo doesn't have the trip meter reset cable so I want to take the one from the non-working speedo and put it on the working speedo. I don't want to break the cable so I don't want to force it off the speedo. Has anyone removed the cable or replaced the cable?

I don't know about that one, specifically, but others with cable, that I've worked on, the cable just unscrews, like the speedo cable.

You'll have to disassemble the can from the guts to gain access to the cable internally. The cable needs to have the two ears depressed to extract it from the hole.
You can't extract the cable without gauge disassembly, otherwise you'll certainly break off the cable attachment ears.

If you have a thin u-shaped blade that you can get under the cable lip then push forward to hold the two ears inward, the cable and housing just pull right off of the speedo. Or, I don't remember correctly. smiling smiley I don't remember any unscrewing of anything.

Thanks All. I have found the answer on You Tube. The rear assembly of the Smiths Speedometer is removable without affecting the mechanism. With the back of the speedo removed the trip reset cable is easily removed by using long nosed pliers.
