Hi all,

So I have some scratches on the outside of my original windshield I would like to buff/polish out if possible.
Because this windshield has a tint and the scratches are somewhat deep I thought I would just leave them be.
This is a driver and they are not in my field of view because they are on the passenger side.

I would like any comments as to if I could polish these out without causing more damage.

Your thought please?

Jim T

Go to a good glass shop. The "rule of thmb" that I have consistently heard, is if the scratch is deep enough to catch you fingernail, then it is too deep to polish out. Today their are fillers available that can fill scratches. A good glass shop would be able to advise you best.

JIM: "FORGETABOUTIT" Been there done that. Tried everything available on the market, from "Eastwood" kits to having a "Commercial Window Glass Polisher" take a look at one. NADA. Tempered glass is as hard as Diamond. waste of time AND money. Live with it or replace it. I still have the old Eastwood Kit you can have for the postage if you want it. smileys with beer

Sorry, but I have to point out that windscreens are not made of TEMPERED GLASS.
They are laminated and somewhat softer than tempered glass and can be worked with tools and even drilled for hardware.

Reply too Lance.. N American requirements were for 'laminated' ..but..not so in 'other' markets.. UK used to use 'safety glass' (shatters into small peices when hit) .. regardless:- polishing scratches out of glass is a chore best 'outsourced ' to an auto glass specialist for both advice and remedy if you value your time.

...if you can polish out a scratch expect it to have distortion where you polished out, been there...

Call five different glass shops. They said NO to removing scratches in windshields. And YES, TEMPERED glass is used for door and rear windows, Tempered for the windscreen. You still ain't going to polish out scratches. Good Luck. eye rolling smiley

Thank you Joseph and Timothy. Seems I stand corrected. Must say though that I've never seen a windshield that wasn't Laminated Glass and had no idea that the UK used tempered glass for windshields. I always thought that side and rear glass on vehicles is usually tempered but perhaps I'm wrong there too.
I have to think that what would be a stone chip in laminated glass would end up being a pile of glass pebbles in your lap and a hurricane blowing in your face.

LANCE You are RIGHT, I was WRONG. Side and Back glass "Tempered" Windshield/Windscreen . Laminated. When I brought a VW Back from Germany in 1960, I had to have the windshield changed because it was the wrong type for the US market. I really don't know which type it was. ????? thumbs up

Thank you all for your great information.
I guess I will live with the scratches and consider that part of the overall patina.
It's a driver anyway and the scratches are mostly on the passenger side (sorry honey).
