Michael, that is indeed British slang for an umbrella. Here in Seattle we call them "Bumbershoots" - and no "local" would get caught dead with one :-)

Don't know why the "Bumbershoot", maybe someone dropped us on our heads one too many times when we were young!

YUP: British "Slang" sometimes will get YA. Way back then That British Girlfriend I had, told me she was "All Knocked UP" I panicked a little until she explained that just means being tired. WHEW.
