You know a 302 will fit in there. I remember an old Hot Rod article from the 60's where they put a 289 in an 1800.

302 V8. Miata front and rear suspension with a Cadillac CTS rear diff.

Other than that, stock Volvo.

Curtis has got a soft spot for Volvo's on BritishV8. You can start a build thread over there too. He explained how some Volvo's have a English connection. Pretty wild running gear combo!
