“Mildred “Millie””
Since my father’s passing on May 22, 2015 I have been searching for the MGA he had when as a freshman in college. On Christmas morning 1959, my dad received a “brand new” MGA from my grandparents. The MGA was black with red interior, wire wheels, either a black or charcoal grey hood (My mother can't be 100% sure. After all it was over 55 years and more than 25 cars ago!), and whitewall tires. In the winter of 1962 my mother and father learned that my mother was pregnant with my older brother. They reluctantly decided to trade the MGA in for a new and most definitely larger Chevrolet Biscayne.

On April 9, 2017, I purchased an Orient Red 1959 MGA in the State of Missouri. The only known number on the car was the body number 78272. After tearing down most of the MGA and after much searching, I found the chassis number (65845) stamped on the frame as well as the gearbox number (5125), differential number (28940). I then contacted BMIHT and ordered a heritage certificate. The information I received back from BMIHT was shocking, as it matches the build specs of my father's MGA exactly!!! When my MGA originally left the factory it was black with red interior, wire wheels, whitewall tires, heater, and tonneau cover. “Mildred” was completed on March 25, 1959 and left the factory on April 3rd. I’m not exactly sure, but there is a very good possibility (probably 1 in 4) that I now own the MGA that once belonged to my father!!!

Thank you for that story. I'm often struck by the intriguing roles that these British sports cars have played in shaping peoples' lives. I have often wondered what happened to my 1967 MK1 B (OEW with red interior), which I sold in Westfield, NJ when I married in 1972. I waited seven years before buying a 1966 MK1 (OEW with black interior), promptly placing it in storage, where it stayed for 35 years. It's back on the road now and I'm reliving those memories.
