The MG Experience RegistrySteve L's 1974 MG Midget

1974 MG Midget 1974 MG Midget 1974 MG Midget

This car has had a motor and transmission transplant, a Nissan A-15 from japan, a 1500cc motor that makes about 80 horsepower, which is quite an improvement in power, reliability, drivability. This particular car has a 5 speed transmission which makes it quite functional and fun to drive. It has also had a roll bar installed for safety and rigidity. It is pre-smog so there is no smog check needed, and is currently registered until October 2012. Car drives like an MG midget, feels like an MG Midget, looks the part of an MG Midget, but has the power of a more modern engine and benefit of a 5 speed transmission.

Car starts right up from cold, and hold idle as it should all the way to ideal running temperature. It has more power than a stock MG Midget due to the Nissan engine and transmission transplant and good oil pressure, the engine sounds very healthy, doesn't smoke or sputter, and makes good power complete through the RPM range, with a good exhaust note. The car shows no sign of overheating, even if it sits at idle, has electric fans with manual switch and an indicator light to alert the driver that the fan is engaged. On the road it feels like a MG Midget should, feels firm but comfortable. This car has had a rear shock conversion, and neoprene bushes installed. The steering is solid, and gives good feedback, but retains that old British feel. The brakes feel good, car stops well, and it pulls up straight. Parking brake works and holds well. There is no suspension noise, ride feels good, transmission shifts well through all five forward gears, and reverse is quite and works as it should, no grinds or slips. Because it is a Nissan transmission, it has synchro mesh in first gear, which means you can down shift into first gear while sill moving forward. Over all a very fun car to drive, gets looks everywhere it goes.
