Any Jag guys here? Oil Seals and might as wells...

I know we've got a few Jag guys here...so feel free to chime in if you have something to add! smiling smiley

My "E" Jag has a couple oil leaks that I'm addressing. Front crank and rear main seal, namely. So...what am I missing here?

-Lower gasket set
-Front crank seal
-Rear crank seal (sticking with the original rope style)
-Flywheel locktab
-Timing chain tensioner
-Oil pump
-Center engine mount (behind cylinder head on firewall)

The car has 58,000 original miles on it and some of this stuff (like oil pump and radiator record) is preliminary.

What HAS been done? Rad hoses, motor mounts (aside from above), trans mounts, clutch, clutch hydraulics.

Just want to be thorough...anything super obvious that I'm missing? Don't want to get "too" carried away with might-as-wells.

Thanks for your input in advance!

Royal.

Jaguar upgraded both the front and rear seals to a much better design in the later Series III XJs.

Check, I believe the seals can be retrofitted. I know when they came out it cured a lot of leaky cars.

It's been a while since I sold Jag parts, but that was something I remember well.

You need to pull the head to change the front cover seal with the new type....worth the effort but fragile on installation....be careful. You can get everything you need from XKs Unlimited.

Replace the front mounts....very tiny for suce a large engine. If it were my car, I'd pull the head before I ordered parts....you may have head stud problems and need new ones.

If you are in there...replace the timing chains.

When you eventually do a valve jod, be sure to upgrade with the late XJ6 valve seals as well.

Oil pump?.....I wouldn't think so....what is your oil pressure?

I had to seal the lower end of a couple of E-types we had in the shop a while back.

Remember to find and replace ALL the O-rings.

One car had severe erosion inside the oil cooler assembly (conical areas the coolant flows through). Rogue coolant had nearly eaten its way through to the oil side. It was just a fluke that I noticed it while cleaning the part prior to reassembly.

We also had a less-than-recently rebuilt V12 that we had trouble obtaining oil pressure on (spinning engine with no spark plugs in it). Ended up having to prime the oil pump manually. Annoying!

Make certain not to leave any tools on the engine before you close the lid. (I heard about this mistake, didn't actually do it!)

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Good luck!

Might as well check the crank pulley while you are about it. They eventually get grooved and leak oil even with a new seal

Oil pump not likely, and the new one is probably worse than the old one.
Same for chain tensioner and damping plates, unless it is actually worn.

The "mount" behind the head is a stabiliser, and should not wear out, if not maladjusted. If it is maladjusted, the car will shake like crazy and/or make odd noises on bumps. There is NO load on it when adjusted correctly and sitting still.
