I like to think of the GT 86 as what the MGB GT could have been if only MG had stuck around for the modern times.

If any of you have read up on the new MG reviews, they are suprisingly positive. However, I have never been able to put the words "Sportscar" and "Front Wheel Drive" in the same sentence. I know for a fact that a FWD vehicle can corner with the best of them and may have actual advantages in some day-to-day driving situations, but it dont matter, I need RWD in order for it to become an emotionl connection.

Anyone need a 1967 MGB?

See, there is my argument...The Mini is a FWD car. In my mind, that means that it could never be a sports car. I KNOW this is a flawed argument, but it matters to me.

Once upon a time I saved all my pennies to buy a Lotus Elan that was promised to the market. It was oft delayed but much anticipated what with Lotus taking a side-trip to become GM property. At the last minute, the car was switched to FWD and came out as the Elan in the late 80's. I went from being willing to pay whatever it took to own that car to not wanting it for free; it went from sports car to shopping cart in that one change. It did not matter one whit that the magazines all raved about it being the best FWD handling car on the planet.

Fortunately for me (and Mazda) the Miata came out a year or so later and it WAS RWD. I had to have one and drove it and several other Mazdas for over 20 years.

I guess the original MiNi wasn't a sports car even though it handled like a bat out of hell.

No it was not to me. It was the Mini that convinced me of this. I had a Midget, my Brother had a souped up Mini that would run circles around the Midget, but it was not as much fun to drive his Mini as it was the Midget. No can esplain; you either get it or not.

..I grew up in the mini age of Oooo kool....I didn't buy it and still don't....gimme the old MGA or MGB instead, or a TR3 for unadulterated thrills at speed.

If you get a new car, you'll still need a hobby. You won't be working on that one anytime soon - and what fun is that?

Yup, a sports car needs to be RWD, or it ain't a real sports car. How else can you slide around corners?

We own three RWD cars and one FWD and have owned many of each. I'm with you, I prefer the RWD.

Totally, I thought of the 350Z as soon as I saw it, very similar styling.
Always hated those cheap looking silver handles on the doors, though...

This unit was designed mostly by Subaru (major arguments between Subaru and Toyota over use of 4WD!). Each will market a version of the car. Both versions will have a 2 liter flat 4 subie engine of about 200 BHP, direct gasoline injection.

The Subie version will also be available in a turbo version of a bit more than 300 BHP.

I'm not clear on whether this rocketship would be 4WD or 2WD.

for the street!

Agree 110%. Likewise when my mate and I were looking at getting a cheap rally beater. FWD is the accepted best nowadays (if you can't stretch to 4wd), but there was no way we weren't going for a rwd. Just more fun! Front wheel drive cars have never done it for me, despite my best efforts - I spent a long time trying to enjoy a mini as I'd always wanted one, but the magic just wasn't there for me.
