Keeping the posts up to date is proving to be I bit more of a challenge than anticipated. By the time we get settled each evening, have a splash in the hotel pool, eat and plan the upcoming day, both Henri and I are too pooped to sit down and write.

We are now well into our journey home, having left San Diego at 6am on Friday in an attempt to avoid rush hour traffic and beat the rush of 4th of July weekend travellers fleeing greater Los Angeles 2 hours to the north. Gordon and Linda Parker have left the group, to spend some more time vacationing in Southern California.

We were joined for this first leg home, by John Rogers ( NAMGBR MGC Registrar ) and his wife Karla in their Citron rubber bumper MGB, and Bruce Wykoff ( former NAMGBR Exec member ) piloting another of John's MGB's.
Our first night stop was in Bishop Ca after a trouble free day on Interstate 15 and US 395.
We reconnected on Saturday morning for a couple of hours, with John and Karla ( California residents ) guiding us to a couple of interesting stops along the way. North of Walker Ca, our American friends peeled off westward, headed for the Rogers home in Nevada City, while we continued northward to our second night stop in Alturas Ca.
A few drinks on arrival, a dip in the pool to cool off and a walk up town for a wonderful Italian dinner brought the day to a happy end.

We have been on the road early each morning to try to reduce the amount of time we are in the car during the hottest part of the day. Thankfully the heat has not been as brutal as it was on the trip down, but temps in the mid to high thirties mean that early starts are still a good idea.
Today was no exception, and by early afternoon, temperatures were well into the upper eighties.
Baker City Oregon is home for the night, and definitely the nicest accommodations we've had on the entire trip.
Tomorrow we explore some twisty Idaho roads as we make our way to Lewiston I'd.

Well, we didn't make it to Lewiston............at least on the day we intended to.

The RV8 decided to eat another alternator after a good start and a short time spent at the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center just outside Baker City.
Azim was able to get the car to La Grande before battery voltage dropped to the point the car wouldn't run, but every avenue explored to source a replacement came to nothing. The eve of American Independence Day is NOT a good time to have car trouble with a limited production automobile. U Haul also proved to be of no use with no suitable equipment available for us to load the car up so we could continue our journey with minimal delay.
After re charging the battery in the RV8, we struck out for Lewiston to see how far we could get before the car quit.
18 miles...........
Crap.......this clearly wouldn't work with hundreds of miles to cover, so we returned to La Grande, Helen re arranged hotel bookings.....AGAIN.....and we set about remaking travel plans........AGAIN.

It was decided the MGB GT and the Midget would continue together, on route as planned, after a night's rest at the Super8, and Azim and Helen would stay until a new alternator arrived ( hopefully Wednesday ) before making a bee line for home.

Tuesday dawned, the Midget gave the RV8 an electron transfusion before striking out with the MGB GT for a 370 mile day over mountain passes and twisties bound for Missoula Mt.
Less than an hour into our day, a text from Azim informed us that the new alternator had arrived, and they would likely chase us down.
Long story short.............they didn't.

Tuesday night sees the Midget and MGB GT in Missoula as planned after a trouble free, but long and HOT day over some amazing roads, while the RV8 made it to Moscow Id headed for the house.

The Midget and MGB will continue via Kallispell for an overnight stop before attacking the Going To The Sun Road on the final leg to Calgary on Thursday.

We've had more than our share of drama on this particular tour, so hopefully we will not see any more before reaching home.

Here are some shots from the past couple of days

A more leisurely day today after yesterday's fairly ambitious day over some great driving roads not found anywhere near Calgary.

Today was a day to kick back a bit, enjoy the scenery, drive slower, and enjoy a picnic lunch.
A relatively early start gave us a chance to enjoy cooler temps getting away from Missoula, and up the east side of Flathead Lake.
After a stop at a local orchard, we made a lunch stop in our third State Park of the day, where we enjoyed a picnic in the shade close to the shore of the lake.
The short drive from just south of Big Fork to Kalispell after lunch was less comfortable due to the increased heat, but we made the hotel by a little after 3, and headed for air conditioned comfort.
Dinner, later in the evening, at the Mexican restaurant next door was spectacular, and a fitting way to end an enjoyable day.

Tomorrow we strike out for home over the Going To The Sun Road through Glacier National Park.
See you back in Calgary folks..................this has been a trip that has frustrated us with car issues, but not to the point we have not enjoyed the overall experience.
There have been many more positives than negatives, and the old friendships renewed, new friendships made along with the time we as a group have spent together, more than eclipse the most trying of times we experienced on this three week
oddessy.

Thanks Dwayne. I also picked up the "Pride of Ownership" award from NAMGBR, which was a complete surprise ( especially since I was not at the banquet ) with so many great cars on the field. Pretty proud of that one.

Our final day on the road saw me check another item off the bucket list, the Going To The Sun Road through Glacier National Park. Henri and Nicole have run it before, but only westbound.
The road was in great shape, but of course very busy. The low speed limit is a good idea with all the natural distractions and traffic volume, but oh what fun a guy could have if he ever got to drive it "closed".

We ran it eastbound of course, starting our day in Kallispell. After traversing the road to St Mary, we stopped for some lunch before striking out for home.
Donna and I had had the top down for the trip over the top, but the sun once more became unbearable when we reached to border, so up it went again for the final push to Calgary.
Note to self ( and other adventurers who follow in our footsteps ), Montana does not allow liquor sales outside of state run vendors, so only beer and wine at places like Costco and Wally World................and if crossing into Alberta at Caraway, there is no Duty Free on the US side.

We arrived in Calgary, hot and weary, just in time for the afternoon rush hour. Happily, traffic volumes were less than anticipated, so we were not tied up in traffic in the oppressive heat of the late afternoon.

Thanks Henri. There were other, perhaps more deserving, but perhaps didn't fill out the required "tale of woe in 300 words or less" at registration. Like me, Wayne Sanders got his car to San Diego, but had quite a tale on the issues he had. Don't know if he shared it with NAMGBR though.

Hard Luck awards are bitter sweet of course, but my tough break had a happy ending, and involved the help of a couple of strangers and some good friends.
