Well, we had a little hiccup today.
Mid afternoon after a couple of long uphill pulls in 95 degree heat, the Midget's head gasket let go forcing us to a stop well short of the goal stop for the night.
However, we chose a place with smiling helpful faces in Dixie WA to break down, and Chris Roop ( no stranger to MGE ers) is under a hour away, so things could be worse.
Holed up at the Best Westen in Walla Walla until parts arive and we can hopefully get going again, sometime Tuesday afternoon.

It's been a busy few days. Two broken cars, and one temperamental one have kept us on our toes, busy with wrenches, and the ladies busy re arranging hotels. Hence no time to feed this thread with more stories from the road.

The fun started with the Midget blowing a head gasket just shy of Walla Walla on Monday. A call to Chris Roop in nearby Pendleton Oregon had a new top end set of gaskets shipped from British Parts NW for delivery Tuesday, and Chris ran them out to Walla Walla for us. We had already got the head off the car, and cleaned and prepped everything ready for re assembly when the parts arrived, so we were soon back on the road.
We made our planned stop that night in John Day Oregon, but 30 hours late. Accommodations here can only be rated as " adequate"...................barely.

Wednesday saw our modern "chase car" throw a "check engine" light and go into limp mode after only a couple of hours driving out of John Day.
Burns Oregon had limited facilities to diagnose the problem, and several hours wait to even get the car into the shop, so Gordon and Linda bid us get on with our trip without them, with plans to re unite down the road once their car was repaired, as they could run the interstate to catch us by Sacramento ( which they did today, Thursday )
Repairs required a detour to Bend Or for a couple of sensors, and the shop in Burns replaced the serpentine belt before sending the Parker's off to Bend's Chrysler dealer for those.

Today has seen a stop in Reno to visit a friend and have brunch, long hard climbs in extreme heat, and a trio of MG's protesting the heat and steep terrain. No real breakdown's, though it seems the RV8 is in need of a new sender for the electric fan. Both the Midget and the BGT have seen their temperature gauges in the HOT zone, and a few stops have had to be made to allow them to cool.
Our night stop in Sacramento has brought us into record high temperatures and an " Extreme heat warning" zone scheduled to last into the weekend. It was 42c on arrival here this evening. Very unpleasant.
Tomorrow we head for the coast and the Golden Gate Bridge ( on Andy's bucket list of Bridge structures to cross ), followed by a trip down the coast road ( California Hwy 1 ) to Monterey.

Some shots from the road.

Lewiston I'd..........before the head gasket thingy, the head gasket thingy, Lake Tahoe from day 8, aaaannnnddd, the barely visible Golden Gate Bridge from today, day 9 from home ( 7 from Radium. )

No car issues whatsoever today, and the cooler temperatures are making time in the car much more enjoyable. The Golden Gate Bridge was the highlight of the day, with heavy traffic and delays on the coast road making THAT experience a major disappointment.
272 miles covered today.

A quick run down of the days on the road; Andy has already covered some of the mechanical details.

Day 3, Sunday, June 18, 2017
Radium to Coeur D’Alene, ID, 248 miles, very pleasant day.

After greetings with other BritsBest participants and members of the MG Car Club, the three MG’s, Andy’s Midget, Azim’s RV8 and Henri’s GT, joined by Gord’s modern sedan, set-out for the day’s travel towards San Diego. The first stop is in Cranbrook to spend an hour at the local car show where Azim and Andy are urged to show their MG’s while we look at other vehicles.

Day 4, Monday, June 19, 2017
Coeur D’Alene, ID, to Walla Walla, WA, 214 miles, very pleasant weather, some parts quite warm.

We began our second heading south of Hwy 95; just short of reaching Lewiston, ID, we took veered off the Hwy to drive the Old Spiral Hwy, an incredibly twisty road down to the river valley leading to Clarkston, WA. From there we caught Hwy 12 westbound towards Walla Walla, WA. Out of Clarkston this hwy climbs a pass and we stopped at a rest area on the top of the pass; the MG’s all needed a rest and cool-down. We carried on expecting to overnight in John Day, OR, but Andy’s Midget had other plans, bursting the head gasket at the seam; plan B in Walla Walla, WA.
Andy has described the event in other postings.

Day 5, Tuesday, June 20, 2017
Walla Walla, WA to John Day, OR, 216 miles, warm sunny day.

The day started early with the dismantling the top of the Midget’s engine to prepare for the replacement of the head gasket. The morning was comfortably cool, perfect for shade-tree mechanics. Shortly after 11:00 am the Head mechanic and three assists headed back to Walla Walla to meet Chris Roop to receive the needed parts. Chris arrived shortly after and being so happy we bestowed a Calgary MG hat to Chris.
After a short drive to get back to the Midget, the head mechanic got busy while the elves carried the duties as required.
We were all on the road by late afternoon and arrived at our accommodation around 10:0pm, readay to crash.

Day 6, Wednesday, June 21, 2017
John Day, OR to Susanville, CA, 369 miles, hot sunny day.

The day started with a very good drive on Hwy 395 to Burns, OR. Unfortunately, a short distance before Burns, OR, Gord’s modern sedan began acting up and the engine light was on; we all agreed that a mechanical shop had to decipher the code and determine the cause. The next available appointment was at 1:00pm and Gord convinced us that the three MG’s should continue on the planned itinerary and the modern sedan would catch-up subject to the diagnostic.
We bid goodbye for now and proceeded to our next stop, Susanville, CA. We learned later that the modern sedan headed for Bend, OR, the nearest Chrysler dealer.

Day 7, Thursday, June 22, 2017
Susanville,CA to Rancho Cordova, CA, 241 miles, very hot, 108f in Rancho Cordova, CA.

A very hot day, especially during the afternoon. A very good drive from Susanville to Reno, NV, where we took a break. From Reno we aimed for Hwy 50 on the east side of Lake Tahoe. We stopped at a great viewpoint that overlooked Lake Tahoe and gave us a great view of the snowy mountains on the west side.
From Lake Tahoe the temperature and drive was very hot and it was 108f at our destination. At one point the RV8 was spilling a good amount of coolant. After much diagnostic we determined that the temperature sensor that would start the electric fan was defective. A quick fix set-up the cooling fan to run all the time and we were again on our way.
As we were planning dinner arrangements we received a call from Gord and Linda informing us that they were back on the road and would arrive at our hotel within the hour; the group of four is together again.

Day 8, Friday, June 23, 2017
Rancho Cordova, CA to Monterey, CA, 218 miles, mild weather.

The prime focus today was to get a great look at, and photos of the Golden Gate bridge.
The lookouts on the north were overloaded with tourists and the bridge was fogged-in. Once on the bridge we were able to take a few rolling photos.
Afterwards the traffic got extremely heavy and it took us for ever to get to our destination in Monterey. The good part was that the weather was on the cool side and very bearable.

First photo at Lake Tahoe;
Second and third, Golden Gate bridge, obviously!

Day 9, Saturday, June 24, 2017

Monterey, CA to Ventura, CA 306 miles, mix of sun and cloud, not too warm.

The day began with a drive along the 17 mile drive in Monterey and a stop for brunch at the Lodge at the Pebble Beach Links golf club. A simply amazing morning.
After lunch we hit Hwy 101 towards Ventura, CA. As we left Monterey we drove by the Mazda Laguna Seca track but did not have time to stop for a photo shoot.
We did, however, stop at the Moss Motors location in Goleta for a photo shoot and Moss Challenge photos.
We then carried on to Ventura, CA for our overnight stop.

Ventura, CA to San Diego, CA, 204 miles, mix of sun and cloud, not too warm.

A total of 2,200 miles since our departure from Calgary.

For the first leg today we drove to the Santa Monica pier to see the marker of the west end of Route 66.
After a short visit, we embarked to challenge the crossing of Los Angeles; very heavy traffic but generally quite good driving. We then carried on to our destination, the Paradise Point Resort on Mission Island in San Diego.
