1971 Austin America purchase - Tacoma, WA

My teenage son and I are looking at a purchase of a 1971 Austin America. Have not purchased yet. Very rust free, engine runs but needs some TLC. It is the 4 speed Automatic. Was stored for 30 years and then pulled out and set outside for 1.5 years. Little water inside as it is in Washington State. I may be paying too much for it, but it seems well spent.

Need some miscellaneous exterior and interior cosmetic parts and some clean up. I have an earlier MG Midget and Sprite.

Looking for information on this type of vehicle in the Seattle / Tacoma area along with anyone with spare parts.

The best resource is the Austin America website that Todd Miller runs. He is the man to talk to about Austin Americas. http://www.austinamericausa.com/

Dave Robson (in the local MG club) has an 1100 and a 1300
He has lots of info on them.

As Rick says Todd's website is an excellent resource. I unfortunately have not met Dave Robson but there are a few 1100 and 1300 owners up in this area. I have 2 americas and they are great cars. Dont be put off by the autobox - I rebuilt both of mine - parts are available from the UK at Jpat and some locally and there is a great rebuild book by john Foulis. The engine is the same as the mini engine so spares are readily available.
I'm just starting the interior on mine while rebuilding an MG 1100

picture is the AA with the rebuilt engine and autobox in a freshly painted engine bay as i'm too lazy to pull it all again to paint

in the MGB forum its a 1971 MGB - pretty standard unless the PO screwed it up. if I'm posting in the 1100 & 1300 forum its a 1965 MG 1100

Thanks for info. We actually bought a 1969 instead. It runs very well other than exhaust manifold mini leak from flange seat issue and a small oil leak. Great fun to drive.
The 1971 does not run, but is very nice. Does not seem wife worth $2000, but value for me is unknown.

As a MG Midget owner we just joined the club in the Puget Sound South. We are looking forward to ABFM and having some fun.

When you are at the ABFM (take your America) look up Dave- everyone in the club knows him!
I will be in Wisconsin for the Midget 50th, otherwise I would be there with you.
