I put this on the midget forum too any advice would be great _ I will post to mm as well

Hi folks
looking for some expertise from this forum as the 1100 / 1300 forum doesn't get too much traffic yet

I am rebuilding my 1098 ADO 16 engine - its basically the same as the midget / sprite 1098 engine. I am about to install a set of 5 ring 40 thou over pistons. I have put on the new rings but cannot get the 5th oil ring to compress enough. I assumed that the 5th oil ring would account for the small block in the groove meant to position it but that is not the case. The ring fits into the bore with the same end gap as the top ring as you can see from the 2 pictures but the small block in the groove is keeping the ring from compressing. The obvious solution is to remove the block! its just got a small mushroom head on the inside skirt of the piston - easy to tap out and everything will fit. BUT . . . . can I do that? Is the block critical for some function or is it just a nice though?
any help appreciated
cheers
Barri

got my answer on the midget forum. the block stays - file down the bottom oil ring!

Glad you figured it out - I was just going to post. Where did you get the pistons? I am going to do a build soon.

Hi Rick
the pistons and rings came with the car. The rings are grant, from CA I believe, here is a link to their catalog - the MG 1100 are the second line down and the overbore is listed as .010 for 10 thou up to .060 for 60 thou over.
http://www.grantpistonrings.com/_Catalog_PDFs/BLMC%20-%20MG.pdf
I also have a full set of bearings as I had standard sizes but had to get the crank reground 10/10 so I will post the standard bearings on ebay.
I'm just going to update my rebuild thread with a few pictures.
cheers
Barri

I scored a set of similar 40 over NOS pistons for $100. A few people have advised me to leave the 5th ring off altogether but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that.

This is NOT James(ibcnut) .but tim trevithick ( forgot my ID details) ;- As long as you have a segmented (3 or more pieces) oil control ring (above the pin) you can leave off the skirt ring :- history of the '5th' ring ..in Uk where this style of piston was initially produced by 'Hepolite'..(aftermarket replacemnts..which were adopted as a BMC supplier in late 70's ..sometimes offered in Gen 'BMC' packaging) because most english machine shops from 1950's through early 1980's did NOT use finishing hones..and bored to piston size...leaving a rough finish..which lead to excessive oil consumption on the original 4 ring pistons .. to counter this problem hepolite produced a 5 ring piston.. with 2 oil control rings.. again.. its NOT a neccessity in a properly finished bore ..the origianl style iron one piece oil ring is not very efficient ..if by chance you fit a segmented oil ring and an iron one below skirt..it will lead to premature bore wear ..due to not enough oil getting to upper part of bore ..with 2 iron oil rings the issue is not severe..but you have extra friction..from one uneccessary ring ..another note on 'hepolite' parts.:-the 'apex'ring sets have a stepped top ring..to miss the ridge at top of cylinder.. so one does NOT have to remove the ridge ..a light honing will suffice.. plenty still avail via internet..if you take time to search. another note on 5 ring pistons.. 'hepolite' like all buisness's taken over by corporate shenanigans that signified the growth of the 'financial services sector' came under the marketing banner of 'county' ..they continue the same pattern of 5 ring piston to this day .. produced wherever they can make the most profit ..hence some batches are somewhat shoddy.. different sizes and different wieghts in same package..caveat emptor. check wieghs and dimensions carefully .. or buy old stock or OEM when poss..
