Much like the tonneau/top snaps that have a nasty habit of going loose and beg the question, "Why did BMC put an access hole to the back-rnd securing nuts that doesn't line up with the snaps or even offer access in a way that allows a normal wrench or fingers that bend towards the palm access?" I was playing around with the MG today and made the mistake of removing the lower radiator securing bolts.

Why did BMC put said bolts in the ONLY position along the length of the radiator that cannot be accessed by a wrench )or fingers) due to the frame rails. Just when you think that you've seen every example of an automobile company going the extra mile in order to make something absolutely unaccessible to a backyard mechanic, another example seems to come along. (...and ALL automobile manufacturers are guilty.)

Time to take a ride and see if I shaved some degrees off the Temp reading with Mark's lower-valance mod!

Try changing a starter on a Lexus V8.
For those that dont know its under the intake manifold in the V, so everything comes off to get to it.
Gotta love it.

Or a manual tranny dipstick with a tiny access hole hidden behind a radio that you can hook you finger into, but never get it out alone!

Ford's new truck engine is a new low in auto tech design. You have to destroy the spark plug electrode inside the engine in order to remove the spark plug. If you drop it you then get to remove the head. To remove the head you have to remove the engine. To remove the engine you have to lift the cab off the chassis.

OH...the special tool to help change/destroy/remove the Spark Plug is about $100 unless you have to buy it from Ford.

I guess they DID learn something from their brief association with JAGUAR. None of it good apparently.

Not in Fords defence but most plugs in todays cars/light trucks never get changed anyway. If you drop something down a spark plug hole then off with the head is not unusual.
I guess you could say buying Jaguar was an association and I think Jaguar got the most benefit. Now Tata motors has its turn at the wheel.

I dont have an opinion about either one so have no other comments. Not now anyway.

Just a little stir of the pot.

Ron

I really enjoyed reading these inputs, all humour is welcome when it comes to car maintenance. The problem is that cars are made in a step by step production system that ignores the fact that some poor bastard has to get at it to repair a fault.

With the MGC/MGB Mk2 gearbox, yes the dip stick is a real "Pain in the Arse" unless you make up a little hook to latch into the useless handle so that you can pull the stick out without too much oil getting on the carpet.

Keep up the inputs they are enjoyable reading to one who rebuilt an MGTF from the chassis as his first car, This really was a mechanic's worst nightmare to maintain, even simple jobs were difficult for one with big hands.

Keep in mind that its not only a pain to the backyard mechanic, its a pain to the dealership mechanic. Especially when its under warranty. If you don't know how warranty works, go ask a tech at a local dealership. The tech has to take a pay cut for that job, usually 50% or more. So a diff rebuild that would normally pay 6+ hours, now pays 2 hours. I don't feel so bad for these car companies and their money problems. (off topic I know, just venting)
