Yes we all know a auto is slower than a manual.
My only comment was I did not believe their numbers.
I am done.

"There are lies, damn lies and then there's statistics!" - Mark Twain

In the back of Graham Robson's book The MGA, MGB and MGC Appendix D lists some figures that are a bit different.

MGC with Overdrive; MGC GT with automatic; and MGC North American specification respectively:

Top speed: 120; 116; 118

Zero to 60 mph: 10.0; 10.9; 10.1

Standing 1/4 mile: 17.7; 18.2; 18.0

These are quoted as being from Autocar for the Home Market cars and Road & Track for the NA Market car.

This would seem to show that the automatic was not that bad, but it does make a difference. Not in the realm of a modern automatic, but the Borg Warner was considered in that era to be the second best automatic out there. Second only to the GM TurboHydramatic. the same one used by Rolls-Royce.

And if someone wanted to make it better there were "Shift Kits" available from B&M that would tighten it up a bit. And I have around here somewhere instructions on how to do the modifications to improve it, too.

I wouldn't pass on an auto now. I sold the one auto GT I first had because I only wanted 4-speeds with overdrive in the three cars I had at the time. Wish I still had that GT now.

C Ya,
Mark

17.7 is what I keep seeing as the manual figure on numerous sites. Haven't seen any auto figures. Personally I really like the auto's and if a deal comes my way I wouldn't hesitate buying it.

Everyone has a different idea about what they expect from a particular car. If you want slam bang performance from a 6cyl, opt to an AH or better, any XK engined car Aston is certainly worthy. To me, an MGC defines affordable sports car touring. Once the front suspension and brakes are properly sorted and the steering properly investigated/and sorted if need be, it is as reliable as any and perhaps more so. The cheapest cars to maintain mostly are the A series and B 5 main cars due in part to the shear number that were made.

As far as performance, the MGC holds its own regardless of the transmission or market target. On the other hand, as with virtually everything, there is a way to improve on any car. Our UK member Shaun Holmes is a testament to how far one can go to improve on the BMC last ditch effort of MGC design.

It's only time and money. smileys with beer
