This one is mine now:

It is the second one I have owned. It hasn't been run in a year, so the carbs and brakes need attention. I also found a couple of cups of coolant in the bottom of the oil pan. Given that the radiator header tank was cracked I am suspicious that it froze at one point. I pulled the head and found that there was no coolant in the cylinders and no cracks in the head (cleaned and mangafluxed). What is the weak spot for cracks or leaks in the lower half? Are there any freeze plugs in the timing chain housing?

I can't help on the technical questions, but I wish you luck! Please post up some pictures when you have a chance, as I'd be interested in the car's actual condition. I know that the pictures were pretty bad in the CL ad.

Welcome Mark to the best MG forums that can be found the the best MGC forum and group anywhere.

The core/welch/freeze plugs are on the sides of the block not front or rear. One on the back of the head a little smaller than the block plugs which number 2 each side.

You can find an invaluable PDF on my web site that illustrates and numbers all the parts for the MGC most importantly the items that are totally unique to the MGC. If at some time you need new parts, those numbers are my base for sourcing any suppressions and OEM parts you may need.

Once your motor is sorted, the brakes and front end should command your inspection and attention. The MGC is virtually unique from the firewall forward and the 4 wheels. Front floor pans and gauges being the only other parts I can think of off the top. Everything else is mostly MGB

Thanks for the tips. Here is an update. I had the head cleaned and crack checked, no problems there. The only internal plugs I have found that would allow coolant to leak inside the block are the brass plugs in the top of the head. I drilled through one and they are about 1/4 inch thick and tightly held so I dont think that's the problem.

Are there any freeze plugs inside the timing chain cover? If one leake there it could possibly wind up in the oil pan.

I refaced the exhaust valves and seats and compounded the intakes. While I was in there I installed intake guide seals. Hopefully that will keep it from sooting up. I think I am going to reinstall the head and pressurinze the cooling system to see if any more coolant winds up in the oil pan.

I did loose one of those brass plugs in the head once while in RI. Made lots of white smoke and sump was full of antifreeze. I staked the plug back in, changed the oil and filled up the radiator and am still driving it. That was 1990.

Hi Mark, welcome to the "C" community! There are no freeze plugs in the front timing area.

The inside of your engine has some sort of something allover it.

Nice job of wire tying tensioner and shoe, You have spent some time painting that puppy. What else have you done to the motor prior to the assembly? Very nice job.

Ron,
I'm starting a journal on the engine assembly. Got one entry done, and will add more info and specs.

I wound up pulling out those brass plugs because I had the head "creamated". My 91 year old machinist buddy said they wouldn't stay put after the heat. When I pulled them out they did look like coolant had been seeping up the sides. There was a lot of oxidation on them.

To fix it, I found that you can tap out the holes with a 1/2 inch national pipe thread tap and install cast iron plugs in them. I used thread tape to seal them. I'm normally an originality nut but I wanted the peace of mind knowing these wouldn't leak. Besides, they are underneath the valve cover.

Hopefully I will have the car back together next weekend.
