Gentlemen, I see from time to time HS6 carbs come up for sale,AUD 208, Aud 9 etc, My question is can any HS6 carb work on MGC .I believe that the true spec carb for MGC is AUD 28 for 68 model and AUD 342 for 69 .Where or what is the AUD208 from ex.

Don't have mine in front of me now, so can't be specific right now, also not an expert...but the short answer is " no...not all hs6 carbs will work on the MGC. Different bowl mounts, different linkages, different jets and needles, different piston springs, different throttle disks.
Can they be made to work?...yes with enough parts(money).

Agree with Mike so when you shop for carbs (HS6) try to get ones that are close, ie float bowls at same angle, similar linkage, etc. You may need to change springs, needles, etc to get what you want.
I dont know what a AUD 208 fits but I am going to guess Volvo???? AUD 9 is Volvo.
MGC carbs for USA were as follows 1968 AUD 287 and 1969 was AUD 342. Inthe UK they were Aud150 for 1967/68 and AUD 341 for 1969.

Looked in my old Tuning S.U. Carburetters book and I couldn't find a listing for those carbs. An AUD 200 was used on a Volvo B18D - 122S in 1965/66, an AUD 202 in 1966/67 and an AUD 204 on a B18B - 1800S in 1965/66, so it could also be from a Vovo.

As far as I know, all S.U. HS6s are essentially the same, up to a point.

Up through 1968 they had fixed needles and after that they had spring loaded needles. The fixed needle carbs have a larger hole for the jet and the jet needs to be centered on the needle so it will not drag or bind the piston. (Not always easy.) The springloaded needle body has a smaller, centered jet hole and the needle is spring loaded to always be at the rear of the jet and sliding on the jet hole. (Makes for more consistent fuel metering and no need for centering, but wears the needle and jet in the long run.)

The springloaded needle carbs also are the ones with the side vacuum tap used to eliminate the PCV valve on the 1969 and later cars.

If you want to buy the necessary parts I think you can make just about any HS6 into a match for the MGC carbs. If you start with a fixed needle carb body you can build it to match the 1968 carbs and a spring loaded needle carb can be matched to the 1969 carbs.

The AUD 287 carb model specifies not only HS6, fixed needle, but the jet size and type, needle profile, mounting of the float at level and the type of throttle levers, choke levers, interconnect linkage, dashpot spring and damper specs. That also lists all the parts you may need to change to get another HS6 to be an MGC HS6.

This is my opinion, but if you were to check with Joe Curto (http://joecurto.com/) I think this would also be his answer.

I have taken various HS6 carbs and changed them fit my MGC. Some are easier to convert than others as Mike and Mark pointed out. If you do a 3 carb conversion you will need to change needles and springs anyway.

Seems Jimmy Hilton is off the radar for a while. I sent some MGA carbs to Dana at SU Carbs and they look great (all polished up) but have not put them into action yet. I am sure Joe does an excellent job too.

If I am not going to show the car then I rebuild them myself. I dont have the patience to polish dashpots or send little stuff off to the plater without something ending up missing.

Some HS 6 have large bore needle valves and others have small bore valves..
Any one know which ones apply to MGCs?

You can get there information about the original spec of the carbs, needle etc.
Prices and service are also very good.

According to the site, 68 USA cars need KM needles, and 69 USA cars need BAD needles.
