Gear issue in transmission

So...I opened up the access plate on the transmission to take a look. Unfortunately, though everything seemed ok, I noticed a tooth missing from what I believe is third gear. Now, excuse my lack of knowledge here, but it seems like it is the taller, thin gear, not the non synched drive gear. Is this perilous? Or something that can be ignored for now. A transmission rebuild is a bit cost prohibitive a the moment unless dire...

Thoughts?

Gearboxes, I know very little about. Except when they go wrong.. then I ask someone else to fix it or buy a new one.
Having got as far as having the engine and gearbox out of the car, I don't think I could even consider putting it back in with a known problem in the g/box. It has to be false economy.
Unless of course you love the idea of lifting out that great lump again sometime soon !
Just my two pence worth.

A pic of the problem would curry more informed advice. IMHO if 2/3 remains and more importantly the missing bit is salvaged/scavenged/removed, an "aware" owner/driver would understand the inferred next foot fall and be somewhat cautious in 3rd gear. OTOH, I do not dispute Richards better advice budget consideration not with standing, his is the more proper avenue to follow.

So we now believe not only was the PO a bit ham fisted, he likewise was challenged with his foot hand co ordination...
I hope it is not so, but it almost appears this is the tip of an iceberg. GOOD LUCK! smileys with beer

Watching Jon Twist's video of the details on how the gearbox works, I can clarify a bit. Its a single tooth on the engagement teeth. Its totally sheared off. With the synchro system, I would think since it works on a spline capacity, it would have little effect?? I'm not even sure how that could happen unless it was a defect from the beginning. I looked all around and didn't see any remnants so I am guessing it was an old injury.

I will try to crack it back open to get a picture

I'm sure it dropped to the bottom and drained out with transmission oil changes over the years...I looked all over and saw nothing.

It could get into the OD.

It was sitting for a while. I had it up on stands, engine running and shifted though gears with no issue but with no real load.

Thanks for all the help...I may throw it back in and see if there are issues. The engineer in me has a hard time seeing how in a spline connection a single missing tooth out of 30 or so would drastically stress the gear or fail to transmit torque. Good advice with caution and a careful search for the remnants. My guess is this was an old injury that the PO never detected.
