I should probably just set up a web cam in the garage so I could continually pester everyone for ideasconfused smiley

But here's the next one on anyway.

Any tips for valve removal from the head ? In particular how to get the cotters off the valve stems.

Sorry to sound obvious, but you do have a valve spring compressor ? And the head off?
When the springs are compressed, the cotters should pretty much just fall off into your fingers.

Unless of course you are trying to get the springs and cotters off without taking the head off.
That can be done... buts its also a bit more complex, involving various techniques to avoid valves falling into the cylinders !

Thanks, guys.

This is an engine that has been sitting awhile, so unlike the video the cotters don't just fall off when the spring compressor is applied. Older B series engines have a circlip that you pull off, so I wasn't sure how it worked in this case. Looks like it is just a split collar held together by the valve spring cup pressure, but all stuck together due to age and the elements.

I probably just need to add some penetrating oil and work them a bit more to get them off.

Regards,
Chuck

Tap them with a "gentle persuader", or lever them off with a screwdriver.Just held on by the pressure from the spring. They wont resist much.

Famous last words !

Back in the day....we would smack each spring cap before starting to dis-assemble the head...most of the time the keepers just fall off once the spring bottoms w/ the compressor. Might need to add a screwdriver to the task.

Just to finish up the thread, ended up having to use an external "off the block" style valve remover, looks like a big C clamp. I was unable to use the hand clamp on the remover, luckily it had a screw type clamp. I set it up tight, with a block of wood against the valve head, then screwed it down to compress the dual springs. As predicted, keepers either fell off or were easily worked off with a screwdriver.

Thanks again for the tips.

Good for you. I've always taken the easy road here and just taken the head to the Machine Shop.

I took the valve springs out of a head for the first time earlier this year, so i can't speak from years of experience, but i found that a good "tap" on the valve cap was necessary to break the "stuck together from years of habit" seal before the spring compressor was able to move the thing at all. a little rap on the cap and it would often jump back.
