Council Bluffs is on the Missouri River across the state from me so I am not looking...but the body looks sorted on this major project. No dog in this fight...

Robert; could be interested but car # 7944 can not be a 1967 model?? Your thoughts.

I got up before the break of dawn and got an email from a fairly new customer with whom I have been swapping MG T parts.
I can honestly say that between Davenport Iowa and the Colorado border with Nebraska there are probably only a half dozen MGCs that I know. I have never heard of the dealer and he seems totally out of water with what he's got.

Dropped the "dime"...

Just spoke with listed salesman who says the "owner" owns the car and had "his" dealership rebuild it at a cost of $22,000 as it sits. Asking is 9K. As Mr Robert Simmons continued to refer to "we" I asked for who "we" was and also the name of the "owners" whereupon he replied, he, Robert was the owners rep but would have the owner get in contact with me. Not wishing to get into a Bill Clinton debate on what is is or what owner is owner of, i declined. I can tell you I have no MGC customers in the area of Council Bluffs so presumably any new parts are from Kansas or Moss.

I asked what parts come with the car and he said "all"...
I asked specifically if the bonnet was steel or alloy, he opined steel.

I then told him I hold myself in the highest esteem as one knowledgable about MGCs, telling him it could not possibly be a 1967 given the numbers, that the bonnet should be alloy and I would follow up on that, and that if indeed an early car it should have the side markers...but those two holes are small enough I couldn't seem them from my front porch nor perhaps in the pictures which are an easier view....

I just thew that in to get Laurens blood pressure built back up...seems the red has rushed from his neck earlier today...devil smiley

There are two toll free numbers, I called and got Robert direct at 1 866 981 2380
His personal email is
amerisoldier@gmail.com

Were I interested, I would call the other toll free 1 877 623 2166 and ask to please speak with the owner and fish exactly who owns this dealership. And determine if this is a consigned piece or indeed the property of the dealership owner or simply the property of the car owner. Too many subtle word games and lax use of pronouns for me to play at midweek with a used car salesman all of whom I consider masters of dog and pony shadow shows...

On the possible upside, it is far enough west that it may be salt free. They take snow rather seriously out in the plains and salt doesn't have much effect on 12 foot snow drifts. Chisel plows and gravel are what are typically used in the winter "out West"...

So, my take is there are entirely too many unanswered questions. My heart skipped a beat or two to see a "rebuilt engine" sitting in an obviously recently mostly sanded car, with so many openings in the engines cavities. I will not belabor the fact someone may have piled a heap of money into a car less than half done by my look, missing a key and unique part covering the motor, reportedly "restored" to this point by a car dealership (read that as $60-$100/per man hour even if you own the dealership as was implied)and some rather dicey "answers" to honest questions.

22K invested asking 9K hmmmmm. Of course if the dealership owner is indeed the car owner receipts would not present a real problem.....
On the other hand why would a car dealership owner allow something so unprofessional completed and be shilled on Efee?

Hope that is enough or more than enough of what I know and think about this.

That car is a 1969. Built approx. May 1969.

Side marker mounting holes still evident on rear wings. By this time the original bonnet could have been made in steel.

Don't know where all the money invested has gone, perhaps to new sheetmetal all around. Front wings are replacements (1970-1974 type.) Doors look like new also (looks like Part No. tags on inner face, black/brown primer.) Likely Heritage parts. Probably rockers, possibly the bootlid, too. Quality work it would appear as the tar/asphalt sound deadening material on the floor is properly replaced.

Should be a 4-speed with overdrive car as auto transmission cooler is not fitted. Later die-cast intake manifold installed.

If all there waiting to be finished it could be a good car for anyone looking for a roadster, especially if the price doesn't go too high.

C Ya,
Mark

No response from Robert. Mark, the prices are clearly posted and this is not a 9K car as it sits imho.

All of those openings really got to me to...wonder why someone would do that??...I'd say you would really have to see it. That drivers door looks wonky to me??

Could be that the dealership "owns" it now through non-payment for ongoing work and took possession of it on a "mechanics lien". Now they might be trying to sell it without investing any further $$$$ or shop time........

Mark....didn't know that there were two different intake US market intake manifolds.....acquired one a while back exactly the same as the one on this car and which had the same "webs" between the tubes, an extremely rough surface texture and poorly trimmed die part lines....I had thought it was just a reduction in quality on the overall casting.

Cheers, Drew

Drew:

There are actually two US-spec intake manifolds. One is sand-cast and the other is die-cast. The sand cast version doesn't show the Part Number on it like the die-cast version does. The port runners are separate on the sand cast whereas the die-cast has the three pairs of port runners joined by webs.
The internal finish on the sand-cast seems better than the die-cast, but the outside is better on the die-cast.
I thought that the sand-cast version might be an earlier part, but I've seen '68s that had the die-cast version and my early '69 GT had the sand-cast version.
Just one more of the oddities of the MG

Looking at the listing again I think you may be right about the "mechanic's lien" reason for the sale. Started as a "cost no object" restoration until it was an "object"?

Mark

Can't find the number, where could it be located? Thanks.

Davenport, Iowa, Rock Island, Illinois, Clearwater, USA   usa
By implication Laurens, if you can't read a number it isn't there so it must be the sand cast version as Mark clearly explains above. Of course this is based on you having a real US or more properly NA spec MGC.
