Metallica will sometimes surprise you...one of James' favorite instruments is a Nashville Telecaster with a B-bender, for instance. You usually don't associate metal bands with Teles.

I think the more controversial surprise that they brought about was when they cut their long hair off. People thought of that anywhere from cool to flat out sacrilegious.

They cut their hair to distance themselves from heavy metal. When Cliff Burton died after the 2nd album, the band fell apart. He was the glue that held the band together. When he was gone, they quickly sold out and began making crappy lifeless anti-metal.

Metallica is to heavy metal as Vanilla Ice is to rap music.

I was a HUGE fan in high school but stopped supporting them on principle after the Napster debacle. Bunch of RIAA poster kids....
