I was just looking at the mountain out the front window of Geoff's house here in a high part of Ogden. There is a horizontal line on it about 500 feet higher than the house which is the shore line of ancient Lake Bonnniville. I can't imagine how big that lake was at one time as it is now nearly 100 miles to the shore line of it from here now.

BIG! Wikipedia says nearly 20,000 square miles (about the size of Lake Michigan) and significantly deeper at 1000 feet. That took quite a lot of water to fill. :eyepop:

You can see that line all around the salt lake area. It's amazing how much water used to be in the southwest at the end of the last ice age. Look up Lake Missoula and it can give you an idea of how much water was around. The photo below shows the ripples left in the landscape after the ice damn that held it released. Basically it released enough water go in 48 hours to drain the equivalent of Lakes Ontario and Erie.
