My Benz is in a coma so I leased a VW!

Well, my old Benz turbo diesel doesn't much like cold weather. First was hard starting, then came bad glow plugs, and then came either a dead battery or a dead alternator or both. I couldnt start it this morning, but it did start this afternoon. So I drove it to a VW dealer and leased a Jetta. Its a Wolfsburg edition, in white, 2.5L w/ a 5 sp, and includes leather interior, heated seats, pretty nice wheels and Continental tires. Also a pretty damn good deal if you ask me but I'll say the ads for $199/month on a base model are pretty close to what you pay for the better (IMO) Wolfsburg edition.

The 2.5L isn't incredibly powerful, but is good enough to get around and the revs are at 2500 at 60. The test drive was fun. After a driving lifetime so far of older cars, this will be the first time I've ever had a car that will have (hopefully) working AC or heat, a decent stereo and heated seats all at the same time.

I've had my doubts about VW and I think they are overpriced a bit but for this lease it worked out. I look forward to picking it up. I'll post some pics when I do, even though its just a Jetta.

VW here as well, though given what parts cost and how finicky they are, I doubt I'll do another. My parents had several beetles when I was a kid, and I have some fond memories.

Yeah, I'd hate to see Cassady get a VW now. Actually, he has asked me to keep an eye out for a used Olds Cutlass Supreme turn signal switch for a '91. Hah! They have all let the smoke out!
He will get a new one for Christmas if I can't find a good used one.

I have been driving my 85 300d turbo diesel for the past month while the bmw has been resting. We are still around 40 degrees right now, so no problems starting. I never had problems before even when it was colder. Just get a good battery and replace the glow plugs. I dont think think the plugs are that expensive.

332,000 miles and still counting on my M-B.

Nope, glow plugs are only like $14/piece. Ijust don't want to bne messing with cars right now. I'm working 12 hour days, sometimes more, and I just want a normal, modern car I can take for granted. Hopefully I chose well. I'll probably start messing with the Benz next Sunday. Sometimes older cars are great but sometimes they're just a nuisance, you know? I've got 260K on mine, and it runs great. I've never tried to drive it year round but when it gets to 0 and below, it has always acted fussy.

We had a 79 300d (non-turbo). At close to 400k, we decided to swap for a used 92 300d turbo - different as nite and day - the 92 was MUCH peppier and sportier handling, but the 79 was MUCH smoother riding. I used to compare it to a city bus. The 79 was still going strong - just dumb stuff wearing out and deteriorating after 20 years. Kept the 92 til 2004, it was a good car, but wifey fell for a 2002 C-type and we got it. The 92 had close to 200k and was almost like new.

Well, heres a couple pics. A little peppier than I remember from the test drive. Pleasant to drive. Clutch is a little to far to the right but I'm getting used to it.
