Transom repair 2

Several folks were interested in seeing the condition of the rotted transom on my "Classic" 1973 Galaxy Trihull. If it were a B it would have chrome bumpers! Anyway , I opened the transom just a little with my 3" wheel and discovered the interior wood had rotted so bad it is the consistency of wet newspaper! I thought I would at least find some plywood, but NADA! I suppose it's been rotting for a long time.I will cut more out after dinner and decide just how far to go on this outer wall of the transom. The inner fiberglass wall is decent except there is a 2" crack at one of the bolt holes, which I will groove and fill. For now I'm checking the damage and will order Epoxy resin, strand mat, and woven. So I will be firing questions at everyone and posting some photos. The 4th photo is the inside wall. I will post some better pics later. Back to work.....

It doesn't look too bad at all; if the fibreglass is not delaminated or oil soaked it will repair nicely.

A tip, get several of the reusable/but disposable food containers to mix the resin in; if you try and mix up too much at a time, you will have it setting up before you can use it all. Also get dozens of cheap paint brushes, not the foam type, the bristle type. Also lots of latex or nitrile gloves, the vinyl ones tear too easily.

you have the hard part done; the resin and mat work is pretty easy, and less messy.

Montrose, I can sell the engine for more than I paid so I'm okay with this project................Dave, I appreciate your advice I will get the materials you mentioned, and will order some Epoxy resin and strand mat this week. I plan on cutting a much larger section of the back wall (the engine side) because the inner wall is in good shape except there is a 2" crack which can be faintly seen in photo 4 directly under the bolt hole on right also if you draw a line intersecting bolt hole on left with drain hole almost midway you will see a light spot, which I thought to be a screw hole, it is a thin spot in the glass. I will remove the entire transom outer wall if needed ,the inner is quite sturdy. The entire inner plywood wall is gone, wondering if I should only replace plywood inner where engine mounts or total wall? Your thoughts? This seems to me to be similar to a Dogleg repair on a B! So I suppose the answer is total wall. I think you have some experience in this direction I'm a "Rookie" at it. Thanks, Don

Replace the whole plywood piece; you will find that it is entirely rotted. Once it gets wet, the water wicks up the entire area of the board. If you remove the entire exterior wall you will have to wrap the mat and resin around the corners to the side to tie it all together. I would still remove the inner wall so you can replace the plywood in one piece. Also, if you remove the exterior wall, you will have to leave some at the top where it attaches to the top half of the hull. The exterior wall thickness will be probably at least twice as thick as the interior wall. You will leave more structural strength if you leave the exterior wall as intact as possible.

Dave, I wanted to respond last night, computer shut down. I plan on leaving as much of the outer wall as possible for strength.I'm removing little by little on the outer wall.Need to figure out how I can build a full transom board and insert it because I'd like to leave an edge to fasten to,or I should say glass to. I will post a few pics.
