Well my son just purchased a 1990 Honda Civic Dx project car. As we speak he is going to have to install another engine or rebuild the one in the car. Has anyone here pulled an engine out of a Civic, how hard is is and is there anything special I should know. Do you pull engine, tranny and axles as one unit or what. Totally out of my league.

I pulled the engine out of an 83 honda years ago.
Just pulled the engine.
Don't know about 90's.
You'll need a work shop manuel anyway, might as well get it now.

If it's like any other FWD Japanese car, probably easier to pull the entire unit. Shouldn't be that big of a deal, especially if you've had any experience pulling an MGB engine.

Steve, Jay thanlks for the input. A manual is being purchased tomorrow and yes I have had experience pulling B engines. I guess looking at it as a front wheel drive is what scares me.

Well, many years ago I had the opportunity to pull engines from various Datsuns and VW Golfs, and I can tell yuou that it sure is easier to yank one of those since it's essentially a straight up proposition and you don't have to deal with that tranny back under the car. They are pretty easy to work on out of the car, a bitch to do it under the hood.

If it's totally transverse (gearbox next to engine), it's easier to just wiggle out the engine. Not familiar with Hondas but know front drives very well. If he's doing a change over with another car then swap complete sub frames. There is also a lot of really good Civic sites on the net, I would give them a go.

Bill, I did a search on the wrenches required for extraction and fortunately I have most except the bigger ones. I guess we will also have Japanese garage at the house now.

Bill, I hope it comes in soon. I would like to get it done before the show in September.
