Taxes - Again

The good news. . . I started collecting my Social Security "entitlements" (I gagged while typing that) this year.

The bad news. . . I just paid my Summer property tax which was 68 cents more that a SS check.

Are they (government units) all in cahoots?

Nice you can afford to own "summer property". I have to pay the better part of a SS check for my "year round" real estate property. Kick in the cars and boats and that's about another SS check. Add my homeowners and auto insurance and that's close to another. Any wonder that I'm still working full time?

...btw...just how much do you get in SS??...it takes many SS checks up here to pay our taxes..and on assessed value homes of 80K....which is appx 160 thousand value, not to mention they always raise them, and in fact there is a vote today to raise the millage again...two millages...they never have enough...angry smiley

Jack,

As Wyatt points out, the Summer tax I mentioned is one of two I receive on my year around residence. No summer home, camper, boat, vacation condo, etc. here.

Wyatt didn't mention that Michigan has the highest car insurance rates in the Nation. I pay $480 / 6 months for two cars (Sprite & 1994 Eagle Talon) and that doesn't include ANY collision coverage. That's the minimum coverage I can purchase and be legal on the roads. However, if I get a scratch on me while driving the State will take care of me for ever.

Wyatt, slightly less State Equalized home Value up here in Drift Ice +, but this is Midland - home to Dow Chemical and Dow Corning so one would hope that they are paying their share to support the community.

I'm complaining some but the reality is that I'm greatly blessed and thankful for I all I have.

And, like Wyatt I'm off to vote on proposals to increase taxes.

Yeah, but you guys retired from your $65/hour auto assembly line jobs I kept hearing about from the union foes. (Although I never ran across anyone who admitted to making anything close to that.)

heck I pay taxes all year around - income tax on what I earn (don't get me started on the useless of working overtime to make more money), sale taxes if I spend it in a town about from home (Washington state), property tax, etc etc.

Wyatt is right, it's out there. but they make $29 an hour

http://www.factcheck.org/2008/12/auto-worker-salaries/

remember, labor costs is not the same thing as wages earned.

seems the automakers in Germany pay their workers twice as much, and produce twice as many cars

http://www.forbes.com/sites/frederickallen/2011/12/21/germany-builds-twice-as-many-cars-as-the-u-s-while-paying-its-auto-workers-twice-as-much/

seems like the union bashers are barking up the wrong tree

If you're not keen on the Heritage Thuglation, and I don't blame you if you aren't, here's some middle ground: acceptance of the $70+/hour TOTAL figure (note that "$65/hour plus benefits" is grossly incorrect) plus analysis putting that figure honestly into context. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/10/business/economy/10leonhardt.html
