Let the games begin.

I am already sitting here watching rowing, swimming and cycling. It is on!

Let the (good natured) sledging begin!

A friend of mine tweeted the following from Canada:

In Canada the Olympic coverage has not mentioned Oz once. They are solely focused on a 'Canadian bronze rush'. Actual term used. Truly.

The USA always win the medal haul. The only bet worth taking is what year in the future China will overtake them.

You missed a choice in your poll.

No option for WGAF

Take the time to understand what a part does and how it does it, then you'll have a better understanding of how to fix it when it goes wrong. Beats the scattergun approach every time.

Nothing missed - there is an option for "don't click on the thing" (because I DGAF if you DGAF).

This was probably more appropriate here...

You might not like the idea, Wyatt, but it's going to happen.

sjj...well we'll have to agree to disagree...China is a vast and disparate nation with more ominous internal strife than most any other its size on the planet. If history is any guide, it will implode once again as it has numerous times in the past.

I wonder if anyone has ever thought of putting raydots on those single sculls so they can see where they are going...

Now you’re Nostradamus able to predict future gold medal winners.
When will this happen?
Does China beat us in 4 or 50 years? Did you have a vision that this happens?

BTW I thought the opening Olympic ceremony stunk. After paddling across the Atlantic in my kayak fighting thirst, starvation and storms I was very disappointed. About bored me to sleep. Apparently I am not alone. It was like a bad soap opera where you could walk away for an hour and not miss anything. Someone should have a talk with Sir Paul. Polarizing a failed national healthcare (NHS) was the low point for sure.

I heard a riddle last night:

A Greek, Irishman, Spaniard and Brit went into a pub and shared a few beers.
Who paid the tab?

Answer: A German

Well I’m off to climb Mount Everest so see you in a bit.

Nope, no visions, "Don" - unlike you, I don't believe in silly superstitious nonsense like people hearing voices and seeing visions of angels and other such symptoms of mental illness. I merely think it's a foregone conclusion based on the rate of development of China, its demographics, the strength of its economy, and its past performance.

By the way, since you're talking "gold medal winners", China already beat the US at the Beijing Olympics. They were only ten medals behind the US in the "total" medal haul, if you care about the loser medals - the silvers and bronzes.

With China set to overtake the US in 2016 as the world's strongest economy, it's only going to become stronger at investing in sport, and attracting the burgeoning Chinese middle class to get their kids interested. Therefore I believe it's a dead cert that they will also, at some stage in the future, surpass the USA in the total medal haul.

I completely understand why you and Wyatt are in denial about it, and would be happy to use the nationalism that clouds Wyatt's whole brain - and your half - to my advantage. What about a little wager, Wyatt? What odds will you give me on the Chinese surpassing the USA's total medal haul sometime in the next 20 years? Don't worry, it won't be a "small" $10,000 wager... just a token amount. Say a hundred bucks? spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

There is absolutely no doubt that China are on the edge of being the worlds super power. You may agree or disagree, but I'm certain they will make it in the next ten years, and the US will end up having to Fellate China.

We're realistic eye popping smiley Getting better in a few sports, but I suspect anyone that wants to be a career athlete migrates south at an early age for the bigger opportunities, training, sponsorship, just like the "brain drain".

The opening ceremonies were... interesting. I give it a 9.6 for originality, though.

Good article grounded in reality, not fantasy, covering China's extraordinary rise in sport and predicting it will top the medals table yet again this year. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/olympics/london-2012/9433582/London-2012-Olympics-China-aims-to-stay-on-top-of-the-medals-table.html

Oh dear - more gnashing & wailing for the Brits in the cycling road races as they just miss out on a gold for the women.

Not from this Brit - a great race, it was always going to be close and a silver was fine - we take what we can get these days! grinning smiley
I guess the Aussies were back in the peloton somewhere..?

The bit about the brain drain
You do realize Skye that possible raises the level of intelligence in Canada as does New Zealanders moving to Australia

And let's not forget... our athletes are amateurs...

We also have 1/10th the population to draw them from compared to the US.
