How much stuff have you been accumulating on your hard drive? The reason it takes longer is its looking through more files. Do you ever clear your temporary internet file cache? If not, go to Cnet and download Ccleaner. It is a great utility that clears out old temporary internet files from the computer. Does a better job than Windows.

The SASW can be set to just look through Windows files and registry and leave the other areas alone. That will save a lot of time on the scan.

But first, go get Ccleaner and clean up the temporary internet files. That will take a lot of useless crap off the computer.

Are you sure it's just the computer that's corrupted?

You only need to check your "C" drive. If you have large picture files on "C" it will take forever. Dump your large files onto a separate hard drive and don' t let SASW check it. Probably doesn't need checking anyway.

I would uninstall, download a fresh version, install and update - then run again. It doesn't delete any data and will take no time at all.

Be careful with CCleaner: if you delete files in Applications/Programs, it can delete your registry files for Office.

If you still have issues, download and install Megabyte's Antimalware - also free at download.com. Heavy duty and easy to use.

It is ALWAYS a good idea to save your important stuff to an external source.

Use Google Cloud for free, or you can buy an external hard drive at Office Depot or Staples. They backup automatically, and show up on your computer as a separate drive labeled like the others - C, D, E, etc. All you have to do is click on any folder that contains your important stuff and drag it to the new drive's folder. I can't tell you how many times I've had to replace or reformat hard drives and irreplaceable pics were on them - especially now that most people have digital cameras.

Wyatt, run the program, go to the "scan your computer".

You can uncheck everything but the C drive and do a "Perform Quick Scan" on it. That should not take a long time.

or:

Check the "perform custom scan", check the "selected folders", click "select folders",a new window pops up, click "add", open "my computer", open "C", go down to the Windows folder and click it, then "ok", the "close" the window, then "next". It will take off and scan the Windows folder, the registry, etc. and should not take long.

I agree with the others; it's checking large files that don't need checking.

I just ran it on my computer, which has a lot of stuff, it took about 27 minutes.

A lot of the "free" anti-spyware downloads you find on line actually installs spyware and opens a porthole for much more.

That's true... download.com is run by CNET, a trusted source in Geekdom.

Also, if you see the same advice in different sources - Time, CNN, local paper - it's usually an indicator of validation from the tech community.

Cnet is the site I use for anything like that. You can trust their reviews.

Actually Bob, to be "safe" eveery drive needs to be checked. Funnily enough a large number of spyware and virus are imbedded in pictures. I even had an issue (some years vack) where a Photo CD created by a chain photography store ended up with viruses in picturesa created from a roll of 35mm film I had them develope. It cost them big in compensation as something like 400 custoemr were affected.

Simon, I would have never believed it until I got one. An email from a scammer had a pic embedded in it, which was unusual as it wasn't an attachment, it was so humorous that I clicked on the pic. Wrong. Took me most of the day to get it cleaned out.

It was the only time I've ever encountered a bug like that.
