Anyone any good with Briggs & Stratton Lawn Mower engines?

Hi all,

Apologies that this is pretty un-MG-related but it *is* about engines and I'm sure someone here will know!

I've dismantled my Neighbour's Briggs & Stratton 450 engine from his brand-new lawnmower because he ran it with no oil in the sump until it stopped (!). Apparently there was a sticker on the top of the mower saying to check the oil level before starting for the first time but he thought it didn't apply :sigh:....

I've polished all the melted bearing off the crank and am ready to put it back together to see how freely it runs but I've no idea what the torque settings for the bolts at the bottom of the con-rod.

Can anyone help? unfortunately I can't seem to get the answer from the B&S website.

Cheers all....

The engine looks like this: Or at least it did until I took a spanner to it!!

Ha! Many thanks for that, Kelly! Now I know that, I can reassemble it this evening.

Fingers crossed that it's OK - my neighbour will be gob-smacked because he was about to put it in a skip.

I just love this forum :-D

You are welcome Simon, I knew that manual would come in handy someday. I just noticed you have a 72' GT in teal blue. So do I, well it used to be teal blue until it ran into somebody doing bad tan paint jobs. grinning smiley

Haha - as long as the paint is keeping the rain off the metalwork then it's fine by me!! Mine is about 5 different shades of Teal Blue at the moment and I'm not so sure that there's not a whole load of filler around its back end. I'm refinishing the engine bay and concentrating on mechanicals for the time being but once it's up and running, I'll open the can of worms that is the bodywork!

Actually, while you've got your manual open, does it say how the crank and camshafts go back in to get the timing correct? I'm assuming that there is a mark on both wheels somewhere but haven't looked all that carefully yet.

The engine's a late 2009 model so most probably exactly the same as the one in your manual.

Many thanks for your efforts Kelly....

It says;
install valve tappets
apply oil to crankshaft journal
install crankshaft to magneto side of engine(take care to protect the seal)
turn crankshaft until timing mark (a dot) is facing the caburetor side of cylinder
install cam gear with timing mark aligned to crankshaft mark
timing gear inner chamfer goes toward crank pin
make sure mechanical governor gear is engaged with cam gear
torque crankcase cover or sump to 85 in.lbs. (10nm)

Good luck Simon
I am almost done with the mechanicals and have the tin worm battle in my future too.smoking smiley
