What a great find. We live 50 miles from Hammondsport NY, home of Glenn Curtis, the P-40's designer. The man is also known for his work with early bicycles. Curtis and his bikes evolved in him being known to be the fastest man on two wheels. Also invented the flying boat plane.Love all the history, I'm a Air Force Vet.The P-40 was really ahead of it's time, it was killing Zero's long before Pearl Harbor in China with the Flying Tigers.

Great find. Great pictures too. I hope they manage to get it out of there before its stripped.

GLENN CURTIS died in 1930. A great aviation pioneer. But he did not design the P40 or indeed its predecessor the P36.

They're just about to run a story about it on the evening news in a minute or so.

Phil,

Is that the Spitfire or P-40 story?

Edit: Ahh disregard. Just realized this was the P-40 thread. Burmese Spitfire story is further down.

Actually to split hairs Glenn Curtis, The Wright Brothers, Charles Lawrence, all had a hand in the P40's inception. Curtiss- Wright aircraft was the P36 developer then came the P40 as well as the air cooled radial engines of WWII. Very interesting history of these aircraft.grinning smiley
