GROCERY STORE TRICKERY #1

ya ever walk in a big grocery store and go back to where you bought something b4 and it wasnt thier?? if you werent aware you were suckerd into "grocery store tactics. they want you to waste your time walking around trying to find something you knew exactly where it was before so you might buy something else! does underhanded trickery come to mind? Im definitly not one to fall for these kind of schemes but did take a while to figure it out! next time you walk into one of these big store chains try being aware of this, youll be surprised

Dan, my wife is the department manager in the grocery section of our local WalMart. She says they constantly have them moving items in the aisles. Definately a tactic to get you to look at more items as you search in the hope you will buy additional items.

That is exactly the reason I refuse to shop at Costco. I only buy three or four things, but EVERY SINGLE TIME I go in, they've moved them. Maybe it generates more sales, but it also loses (at least one) customer(s).

Very few things get me as irate as having to wander around the store looking for a few specific items and not having anyone to ask where they are. My wife can do the Costco scramble from now on, I won't go in the store.

Ever buy gas at the pump using a credit card and can't get a receipt without going in the store?? Guess what. That is a tactic to get you in the store where they hope you will impulse buy something. Many times I make it a point to ask the cashier to pass along to the manager or owner that I won't be back because of this tactic. I am nice about it but still get my point across.

I was just at Sam's Club trying to buy some Stevia sweeter. Seems to me it should be with the other sweeteners, but NOOOOOOOOOO. They have it burried in the expen$ive health food supplements by the pharmacy. Definitely trying to get me to buy other stuff....didn't sucker me though!

thats one I never caught on too, good call! you know they got some lowlifes in this world that actually go to school to learn how to to these kind of things and make suckers out of ppl......also why do you think they have those cameras all over the store,not only for thieves but too study your buying habits, getting more money out of ppl is an art!

I sometimes go into a local store chain and buy donuts after 6:00 when they go on sale, like 3 fer $1 anytime time else thier .69 CTs for somethin that prolly cost .25 eye rolling smiley

I don't know what the figure is today, but 20 years ago if they could get one extra unplanned dollar into your shopping cart it would double their profit.

Guess what I do for a living? Move stuff around in a Grocery store. There's a lot going on when things are moved around. Most chain grocery stores are in the real estate business. You want a display in my store? Cut me a deal on the product. Give me some placement, or ad money.

I work on a reset team. Manufacturers are constantly bringing in and discontinuing items. Do the stores put the new items in for free? No! Food companies (Nabisco, Con Agra, Kraft, etc...) collaborate with the stores on schematics, or maps of specific sections such as cookies/crackers. Placement of each item is determined by market share sales and $$$$. Eye level with multiple "facings" is optimum. I work for a grocery chain, but our budget and payroll is supported entirely by this placement money.

And come on, this is America. We demand choice. Most shoppers are attracted to NEW or DIFFERENT. And when a brand is popular, look at all the variations they come out with. I reset a cracker section today. Do you know how many Wheat Thins, or how many items have the Wheat Thin name now? Tastes come and go. A good example of this is the booming Greek Yougurt business. Where did your favorite yogurt go? Well, they had to make more room for the "next best thing."

So next time you go in to buy your licorice, (I did that today too) it's now on the bottom shelf because sales are slow and room had to be made for the Sour Runts.Blame it on me!

I really think there's more going on then simple trickery.

My town got a new Bi-Mart to replace the older, smaller building.

They put everything in the exact place that it was at the old store. And then scattered the newer stuff in between. I like it a lot.

I can walk right to anything in the place.

What??? Costco rocks, If you had purchased Costco stock three years ago (COST) you would have doubled your money! Love Costco and Sams/Walmart also. Any store that keeps more money in my pocket is good. Bought gas today at Costco and saved $3.00...yeah baby! Call me gulable but fine with me.

I'm a prudent Costco buyer. Dog Food, Sparkling Water and Coffee. A couple times a year microfiber cloths. Gas if I'm in the area.

Has anyone heard of the Wegmans chain. Mostly on the east coast.
As far down as Virginia. It was voted as one of the 100 best places
to work in the country. Their gimmick is to have their own products
made to compete with the name brands. Good example that I foudnd the
other day was peanut butter. Normally I buy the Peter Pan brand but
they were "out" of that and had their brand in place of it. Tried it
didn't like it. So I went to the local independant grocery store and
got what I wanted there. It's nice to have that option. That little
store competes quite well with Wegmans and carries some items that I
like that Wegmans does not. The CEO of that "little" store is a fellow
that graduated from high school with my son. He has taken that store
of his fathers and built a very successful business. He also owns a
a 2 chains of local hot dog and hamburger restaurants that also does
very well. And a chain of Frozen Custard stores that are to die for.
I take my hat off to him as he is doing it right and stil has the
customer in mind. And he still comes into the store every day and
greets and interacts with the customers.

What gets me is places like Home Depot, they move the stuff around so much that the "help" never knows where the stuff is.

I do have to say there is plenty of "help" around since I live in a county that used to have one HD and a small Lowes. We now have 2 big HD's and 3 Lowes. Half the time people are standing around.

I am kinda funny about HD, it is less than 1/2 mile from my house so when I am in a project I may make several trips in one day. Was in there Tuesday heard a lady asking where a particular item was, the "help" didn't know and was gonna call someone from that department. I knew exactly where it was.

This town is going crazy with Walmarts too, survived for years with 2 small ones, by the end of 2013 there will be those 2 stores plus 2 SuperWalmarts

I work in a Home Depot on Sundays. However I am also a small contractor and frequent the store about ever other day. The store mgr worked for Walmart in the past and it drives me nuts how everything gets moved around. A DIY customer asked me for velcro and I walked him to the new location the sheet rock isle. I though who put velcro in the sheet rock isle.The DIY said what a great idea you don't need any screws or glue to put up the dry wall.

As said above, the whole point of much of that "merchandising" is to get you to go through more of the store and make other impulse purchases. Liquor stores do the same thing. What is the most popular liquor? Vodka. Where is the vodka? It is in the back of the store so you have to pass everything else to get to it. Where are the expensive brands? At eye level, the lower you go on the shelf, the cheaper the prices. Large size bottles of a particular product are on the right, compared to the smaller sizes. Why? Because most people are right handed, making the big bottles closer to grab. Thats for regular stock. The displays in the aisles and by the register are a different story. In most states it is illegal to pay for placement of liquor so those displays are special deals for products, usually based on how many cases the store buys. The whole point of marketing and merchandising is to get you to buy something. Thats not trickery, that how business is done. If you owned a store wouldn't you want to do everything you could to increase your sales?
